Doom metal is slower metal (not necesarily uber slow, but usually slower) with lower guitars (as in lower tuning, usually also has a death metal type distortion on it). Musically it's mostly chord progressions. Lyrically, a lot of doom bands have somewhat depressing lyrics. Though they need not be depressing, a lot of bands just have darker lyrics, some (sludge metal) have darker and drug related lyrics.
Due to how depressing the lyrics can be a lot of Doom metal bands are commonly called goth metal, which is incorrect. A Doom band can be gothic, but that does not make it goth metal.

It's soooo cool that you mentioned Monumentum! I was in Greece last summer visiting my relatives and saw them in this club, in a cave, on an island. I had a fabulous time. I even got to chat awhile with a couple of them.

MDB has the most depressing lyrics to me. For My Fallen Angel is heartbreaking.
Novembers Doom's lyrics to me aren't as pathetic and depressing to me as MDB. Maybe because I know the band and know what nerds they are.

I don't reckon MDB are at all depressing. They cheer me up no end when it's dark and cold and I'm lonely.

It was GREAT! They loved the fact that I was from the states and that I knew of them. I told them I too dabble with the guitar. It was awesome there! The club was inside a real cave with all those natural rock formations. They dont speak english all that well but you cant tell that in the music you know? So we spoke in greek. Man...I loved it there and I can't wait to go back!! As soon as I can save enuff money again..I'll go, but this summer i'll be spending here with all of you guys. The way I see it, it's not such a bad deal afterall, huh????
