In one of those whacky conversations with ColdBlueSteel, we came up with yet another decent discussion:
How did your musical tastes evolve and develop, and where did you start out?

Heres mine:
Well... growing up, my Mum listened to a lot of pop stuff.. Madonna, ABBA, and the like, and for some reason, also liked KISS and Alice Cooper.. go figure. My Dad was a die hard Pink Floyd fan... and he also listened to stuff like Jethro Tull. Now as a kid I didn't really love this stuff.. but I did like listening to my sisters CDs.. LOTS of Pearl Jam, and Smashing Pumpkins, Live, Red Hot Chilli Peppers etc etc

Now.. at around 11 or 12, I realised that I liked music... but I was without a path. So my Mum decided what was nice to listen to.. resulting in listening to a few bands I'd rather not admit to publicly.

The first CD's I bought with my own money, shortly after this time.. when I was 12 or 13, were Garbage's 'Version 2.0' and Placebo's 'Without You I'm Nothing.'

After this, I went into a Punk Rawker stage... listening to NOFX, Pennywise, Bodyjar, Frenzal Rhomb, Millencolin and so on.
Around the same time, I listened to 'Aussie Grunge' of the time.. bands such as Grinspoon, early Silverchair and Jebediah. This was because of my sister's ex-boyfriend's influence, I believe.
On a sadder note, I also got into Limp Bizkit at this time.. though I'm willing to admit that I still dont regret buying the Significant Other CD.

Then I got into Korn in a big way, after seeing 'Got The Life' on TV, and then 'Freak On A Leash' just blew me away. Without even realising it, I'd gotten way past my Punk stage.

Next up, I started listening to Orgy after seeing the video for the song 'Fiction.' and by accident, after taping this clip, I also got a whole bunch of NIN live clips and music videos.... well that was the best mistake I ever made. NIN ended up being one of my favourite bands, and still are.

At school, with some new friends I was making, I was kinda pushed into listening to metal, but I liked it... and it stuck. One friend also got me listening to ICP.. and that stuck. I also saw videos for Marilyn Manson's 'Disposable Teens' and 'Fight Song' which re-sparked the interest that had begun with hearing 'The Beatiful People.'

Well, with getting myself Napster, it opened up a whole new world of music to me. I discovered so many bands that there's probably too many to list here.. and without the internet I would never have grown into the musical fan I am today. With mp3s to reinforce me.. I went through very brief 'metalhead' 'goth' and 'industrialist' stages... until I finally came to the realisation that all I was doing was restricting myself, and decided to listen to whatever I liked, regardless of whether it would fit some stupid image.

And that's how I got to where I'm at now. Listening to anything I like*.. and I'm going back to some of my older favourites.. Smashing Pumpkins for example. I probably should mention, I never once stopped liking Garbage or Placebo this entire time.

With dad being in a band, and being as much a music nut at my age as i am now, i was exposed to alot of music from a pretty young age.

I grew up with stuff like Pink Floyd, Emmerson Lake Palmer, Pat Metheny, Santana, The Beatles and so on.
I listened to all this music and liked it, without really knowing much about it, it was just music and i liked it.
I would also sometimes listen to the radio and so on becuase my freinds did and i didnt know better.
I'm about 11 at this point.

I then was showed Korn by a mate.
It was very different to the stuff i was used to hearing at home.
I got into it after a while and thus began wanting to look for music on my own.
Looking around for stuff that seemed to be affiliated with this new Korn sensation, i found things like Limp Bizkit, Static X, Manson, Nirvana and then later Pantera and Metallica.

Then it became more. I took an interest in music and wanted to do more with it.

Getting into the rock, i still had all of dads stuff to listen to from home.
My music tastes are on the grow.
I'm about 12 - 13 now.

I buy my first cds ever.
The spawn soundtrack and the Beastie Boys "Hello Nasty"

I get bought a Fear Factory cd for christmas.
Vocals are a little much, but the musics good.... A few days of listening to FF and i begin to really get into it.

Slowling drifting from the more popular stuff i still listened to.
Want more heavy stuff like Fear Factory.

Thus the branch into death metal and its affiliates.

At the same time, ever looking about for new music i find stuff like Nine Inch Nails, Tool and Deftones, smashign pumpkins and so on.

After a few years of this ive dropped some of the earlyer tastes and habits (limp bizkit, statix x, listening to whatever my freinds are) but i still look around for music all the time.
I like a wide variety of stuff and my tastes are still growing.

My musical evolution makes no sense whatsoever.

As a young child, I have no memories of music until I was 5. Then, my parents split, and the memories start showing up. My mom's influences were very country/folk: Tracy Chapman, Willie Nelson, Sarah McLachlan, and the like. My dad's were far more alt or obscure (or just plain old): R.E.M., the Talking Heads, Simon & Garfunkle (and subsequently Paul Simon's solo career), Santana, Midnight Oil, the Beatles, etc., and also a lot of jazz: Billie Holliday, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Nat King Cole, etc.

Then my brother got to be a teenager, and he introduced me to the world of music that pisses off old people. I can still remember being about 8 when he came home with a copy of Green Day's album, "Dookie," and hearing it from my room while he blasted it.

I was in awe, and forever changed. Because of that album, I was the only 2nd grader at my school who swore and actually knew what the words meant. My brother also got me into the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and a lot of punk and mainstream alt.

Then I kind of was without direction: I had no input from the mainstream (because I was in middle school, and had already decided I hated MTV), but noplace for me to travel on my own. Then I met S9, and he introduced me to so many bands I honestly can't remember all of them. Metallica, Disturbed, AFI, the Doors, Danzig, the Clash, Twisted Sister.... I could go on for a week.

Near the end of middle school, my dad sent me a demo of his current band - an Irish band. This resulted in my Irishness kick and my eventual taste for Guinness.

Now I need to go decide whether to listen to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones or to Naglfar...

When i was little our family had some serious problems but my oldest brother took care of me about 95% of the time. He was in a local heavy metal band (they were called Dragon's Blood) And as i grew up i would listen to his music with him i.e. smashing pumpkins, morbid angel, deftones, alice cooper, pearl jam, and then a few oldies like guns n roses. My brother was into the whole "goth" subculture i guess you could say and i grew up like that. My parents also got me to liking all those pulse and techno type of songs when i was in elementry like Ace of base, prince, snap, and 20 fingers. When i got into jr high i went through this lil punk stage where i listened to things like nofx, pennywise, anitflag, guttermouth, and custom etc. etc. Then at the end of my jr high year i started getting into system of a down, kittie, skinny puppy, tristania, him, and velvet acid christ. Now in my freshman year I listen to all those bands and more and i am still in love with 90's pulse music and old rock. Ironic thing is, my favorite year were when i was in my punk rocker stage and now i cant stand punk music cause it think it sounds all the same. -shrugs-

Because most new punk music does. At least the widely known bands.

Alright for me since I seem to be older then most here(not by much) I did most of my shopping for CD's and bought what I thought was good. Beastie boys when it was released and more 90's alternative music. Got really into Weezer and like bands for a while, and Weezer is sitll my favorite band of all time. Near 2000 I went through a jazz phase because of the soundtrack off the anime Cowboy Bebop. Feel in love with it and that brought me to new sections of out of the way cd shops and obscure bands that don't get enough airtime. Which is really where I'm at right now. I like hearing anything new and different, and by new and different I don't mean a buzzworthy video on mtv(which I've watched 5 times in the last year, damn station). I really listen to XM, satilite radio which has massive amounts of new music and all of it is amazing. Bought so many CD's simply because I heard the song once and feel in love. Such as The New Pornographers, Simian, Sebastian and Belle, The Decemberists, Pinback, and some more I can't really tell unless I have my cd's or mp3 collection in front of me. Those CD's are in my cd player right now.

Oh, it's more a progressive genre for all of them except for Sebatian and Belle and The Decemberists. Best lyrics I've ever heard from both of them, and mainly guitar playing. Awesome.

When I was a very small child (7 or so) I really liked pop. I listened to bands like Ace of Base.

Then about 11 or 12 I got into alternative music, like the Wallflowers, etc. when I hit 13 I was all rap. I absolutely loved all rap. I have Eminem's first two CDs even today as I've never gotten rid of any CD I've ever gotten.

I became a christian at 13 and dropped rap, I got into Christian music like DC talk, and Jars of Clay etc.

Well I forsook the religion at 15. I picked rap back up at 15 for a brief period, like a month.

When I was 15 I managed to catch a glimse of a Dragon Ball Z (which I watched then, and watch now) Music Video to Staind-A flat. I absolutely loved it. Then I watched one to Linkin Park-With You.

Linkin Park-Hybrid Theory was my first Rock CD, Staind-Dysfunction was my second.

I dropped rap like a lit pack of semtex.

Ever since then I've listened to all kinds of rock. Nu-metal, Classic Rock, Rap-Rock,(Though I hate Limp Bizkit), Grunge etc. Then this summer my girlfriend at the time introduced me to nu-punk. I don't really like it. Really AFI is the only band from that genre I really like.

I've never gotten into Death Metal, I don't really like it.

I hate bands like ICP and Twiztid.

Started listening to Nirvana in grade 4 as I had my second-cousin over and in the mix of all his rap he had a boot-leg of Nirvana's albums Bleach and In Utero, at the time I don't believe it was labelled at all so I just went along with the good tunes.

Then when grade six came around it was all about White Zombie, Sepultura and Fear Factory and over the years it just progressed nicely.

Although I must say now being a few months shy of 20, I listen to various types of music, industrial, darkwave, every type of metal (favourably black,) rap which only includes ICP & Twiztid, REAL punk from the 70's & 80's, classical, techno/gabber house and variations of each type above. But I do hate nu-metal, nothing more than mainstream, trendy ass, poseur music for teeny boppers who have no real taste and no appreciation for the genre of metal, it's a disgrace.

Since I was brought up by my mother I was around various types of music but she did and does listen to some greats like The Doors, The Beatles, Alice Cooper (her first concert, although she was horrified at the time,) LED ZEPPLIN and things of that nature, but as well a lot of old pop like Madonna.

I'm still listening to people i've been listening to when I was little, cause it's music I love, I'm always learning about new bands that are pretty good. I listen to metal, rock and roll, alternative, blues, all kinds of things. I can't really stand rap, r&b, and pop music, I also hate techno

Listen to some old school 80's punk, where it originally came from. I swear it has the most soul stiring songs I've heard because of the amount of oppresion the bands felt. Must more soul then the shit they put out today because punk is about opposition to the norm, not acceptance.

I myself love Sex Pistols to death because of this. I mean, it's a wonderful band for their time. But became over sold because of how good their music was and never got proper recognition. It's why people hate 'sell-outs' so much, they are joining the opposition instead of fighting capitalism and socialism.

I got the internet and downloaded as much metal and rock as I could, my parents listen to 'in' music and so do my sisters, I used to listen to 'nu-metal' until we got the internet, the first thing I did was get kazaa and listen to something I actually liked. I listen to music now so much more than I used to a few years ago. I used to change my favorite band every week because I just hated everything in the charts and couldn't find something I actually liked.
Now i'm found The 69 Eyes and HIM and i'm so much happier.

ok when i was little my mum always listened to the beatles, blondie, ABBA and all that kind of happy upbeat music.
my dad listens to dire straights and meatloaf. then my sister is a major No Doubt fan so thats always around,
my best friend's parents listen to KD lang and Tracey chapman and stuff like that so me and her just got in to all our parents music (excluding abba)
then i just listen to anything like if i see a cd that looks interesting or i like the name of providing its not dance music or some comercialised pop like atomic kitten and the like, il buy it
my favourite band are nirvana because i just heard heart shape box and fell in love and like almost every song they've done, which leads to ... whilst reading about nirvana i found out about the groups that inspired them and it lead on from there i suppose...

My music evolution is strange.

Since I was really little when I lived in Alabama, I always liked to sing. And my family being big church goers, I would sing in church all the time and at school. I would do just about anything.
Then when I moved to Ohio, (My did is in the government, I move a LOT) I remember watching Dogie(sp?) Howser all the time. And one day I went to the piano and just figured out the theme song and then before I know it, I'm thrown into piano lessons. So I'm screwed playing classical music and I think ... I think I started to like it. But I would just figure out a bunch of pop. Then I remember hearing Ace Of Base...and oh my god. For some reason I thought they were -The- best. My friend Matt's babysitter across the street listend to them all the time...so I got that from her. Then TLC was the shit. I was in LOVE with TLC. Me and my friend Tia would sing it all the way to school. Wow...I was a loser. Then I remember listening to a LOT and I mean a LOT of Paula Abdul(sp?) I was in dance...so a lot of her music is dance music...so I heard her stuff all the time. Plus...she's hot.
Then I hear Meatloaf...however that fat guys spells his name...and I got "Bat out of hell" and listened to it...now I don't know why. And holy shit! Bon Jovi! Duh! I was obsessed with him. And soundgarden. The first music video I EVER saw was Black hole sun...that video was great.
Then I heard some Green Day from my friend Rob and soon enough...my punk phase started....
From 4th grade through about...9th (a long time in my book) I was a "punk"
All about Ramones, Juliana Theory, Dashboard (any emo) all through misfits, Taking back sunday, all that shit...yeah. Blink 182...horrible horrible phase...I had my walls covered in their posters. Then of course...around anti flag and all anarchy punk and all...I was in about 3 punk bands playing bass or drums.
Then when I was little a bunch of shit happened and I followed the Korn trend and got into static x and Rob Zombie (whome I worship)
I liked Stero Mud and Pantera and a bunch of metal and nu metal...including...yes...Linkin Park. Whome I still liked. I had the hots for Chester Bennington for a long ass time...till I found out he was ugly...sorta.

Then that horrible Kittie phase....

So then I heard Orbital, KMFDM, and Professional Murder Music...got into darkwave and industrial. I was a HUGE skinny puppy fan and just started listening to them again after I rebought the cd someone stole from me. a lot more Velvet Acid Christ. I use to sneak into a club in D.C. called Nations, which is where I got most of my music from. I'm still really into Kidney Theives and Nine Inch Nails (whome I've listened to since..4th grade)
So...I could go on...but I need to check my PMs...So I think I'm done...I don't evenknow if I make sense...

when i was around the ages of 8-10 i listened to shitty pop bands. but i also listened to my bro's huge collection of pearl jam, nirvana, all the grunge stuff, and alot of stuff like pink floyd, grateful dead, and other shit like that.
then i moved and got into bands that no one else had heard of yet because they were still small. staind, slipknot, full devil jacket, and tons of bands that kinda came and then dissapeared. then i moved at the end of 7th grade and got into bands like korn, disturbed, system of a down, lots of nu-metal bands. then at the end of 9th grade i saw danzig in concert and i got huge into punk rock, especially the misfits still one of my fav. bands of all time. from there i got into all sorts of old punk. black flag, sex pistols, ramones, and yeah i could go on and on but i won't. from there i progressed into black metal. first black metal band i heard was cradle of filth who i loved completely. then i got into dimmu borgir, children of bodom, and from there it just went further. i'm also a huge fan of death metal, darkwave, some industrial, and countless other genres.

I'll try to make this short and sweet.

Elementary school- Pink Floyd, Stray Cats, INXS, James Taylor, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, lots of pop. Hated N'Sync with a burning passion.

6th grade- Beatles, some AFI.

7th grade- attempted KoRn, really disliked it. Green Day, Blink 182, Black Sabbath. Shitload of Black Sabbath, got nine albums.

8th grade- AFI again. Lots of AFI. Black Metal, Nu-Metal, Death Metal, Industrial, Goth-Rock, Darkwave, Trance, Riot Grrl type stuff, Nu-goth, The Cranberries, Echo and the Bunnymen, lots of Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Placebo

Summer before 9th grade- Cure, Christian Death, MUCH AFI, some J-Rock.

9th grade/now- Big fucking die-hard AFI fan, joined Despair faction. "Darker" Cure (Pornography, Seventeen Seconds, etc), some Ska, some emo. Gackt, Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey. Depeche Mode. Mmmm Depeche Mode...

Um, so now I listen to...whatever.

My dad is a hardcore metal head/punker so I got most of my influence from him. When I was little he'd have me listen to Metallica and Twisted Sister and all those other metal bands. About 3rd grade I started following the crowd and listened to rap. I listened to it all 2 pac, snoop, dre, IcP, JayZ, NAS...ya know the list goes on. Then one day I was riding dirt bikes with my friend and his sister and she pulled out a boombox and put in some NIN. I fell in love with Reznor's voice he is a fucking genius. About this same time one of my friends was listening to a new underground band called Sublime. I really got into that with my whole stoner phase. I listened to Sublime for a while then my mom started telling me about how she used to roadie for another Long Beach band that had played with Sublime and Black Flag...so yeah...I listened to black flag and was starting to feel dissent towards popculture. I then jsut picked up a Sex Pistols cd one day and as the saying goes...my life was changed. Now I can't really stand any kind of pop music, absolutely hate rap, not into the death metal, and am a punker. I also listen to Metallica and Guns and Roses etc. It's funny, I came full circle and am almost like my dad....heh...we went through the same phases and everything...
