(Reuters) - Kuwaiti lawmakers endorsed a legal amendment on Thursday which could make insulting God and the Prophet Mohammad by Muslims punishable by death, in a second reading that brings the proposal a step closer to passing.

The plan still needs approval by Kuwait's ruler before it becomes law and follows a high-profile case of suspected blasphemy on Twitter which caused an uproar in the Gulf state.

The draft now includes a new clause which will mean the death penalty will only be applied if the person stands by their actions when questioned by a judge.

A good example of what can happen when you allow religious influence into the political sphere.

So they are allowed to create a law, then punish people in accordance to that law, even though they "crime" happened before the law was created? Can't remember the name of that type of law, but that alone would make me want to throw it out. Then when you realize the law was designed to force people into a religion, and punish them for speaking out against a religion, the law is complete Crapola.

its called a retroactive law.

I view this law as the very embodyment of a psychotic reaction to anything that challenges one's social filters.

*When someone is not secure in their social view, but is so greatly indoctrined into it, it is possible for them to have a psychotic breakdown to anything (external) to that view that can percievably challenge it.

In a way it is no different from racists who kill people of other ethnicities for wanting the same right; or homophobes who attack homosexuals because in their minds allowing these forces that are contrary to their world view to exist challenges that world view's legitimacy. Thus a violant psychotic reaction results in which they feel an urge to destroy these elements.

When such a thing becomes prevalent and in power...well...we've seen the result of that time and time again through out history; genocide, witch hunts, suppresive laws that always result eventually in a usurpation (or attempts there of), war as others not in the same exact view rise up to impose their own view in its place...ect...

I think when the religious book is saying kill the people who insult the religion, it is a matter of literal interpretation of that religious book.

It strikes me because in Britain and elsewhere in Europe we've got people protesting on the streets calling for theocracy and the literal observance of religious law. And to criticise it is often seen as being right wing, xenophobic, racist, culturally insensitive etc. etc.
