What is life? A measure of time? Our recognition of it's passing? Or is it simply a series of moments. A layer upon layer of coincidence which our supposedly higher mind trys to link together....instead of just living?
I was talking to an ex, and realized how beautiful she was but then I thought, is it in this moment that she is actually beautiful or is her beauty based on a previous moment....

She is beautiful to you now, and you may only realize it because she is an ex. and not a current girlfriend. She may also have been beautiful before, indeed, she probably was, if you don't notice any big changes between now and then, it's simply taken you a while to notice.
What is life? That could take a long time to answer. The short answer is possibly that what you enjoy doing while you're alive is life. If you simply do things robotically then you are merely existing. Existence, in that sense, sucks.
Life is not necessarily a measure of time. Time is relative, like speed, like temperature. A racing car is fast compared to a stationary human. It is cold outside compared to the hot tub inside. Life is movement compared to the cessation thereof which is death.
Recognition of it's passing is a higher form of intelligence. Remembrance also falls in this category. And as cliched as it sounds moments are what we make them. They mean something if and only if we ascribe purpose to them. Of course we can ignore important things and suffer greatly later, or just have dumb luck and slide by.

Life is a trial of preparation. Time is the process of the trial. The recognition of its passing is an obstacle. And also seems the moments are just opportunities to build character during this trial. Our mind is simply a calculating device with many missing variables set about filling in the gaps. When there are more questions than answers the mind generally and immediately fills in those gaps with any bit of data it has gained even if the data is the wrong data. This is why our lives are filled with strife and most times life isn't fun...one has to halt the calculating mind to almost have fun and live a fulfilling life.
As for your ex was she being open, honest, and straight forward with you? Sometimes men find this appealing and usually it is the reason exes hook back up, but then again maybe at that moment you just had a boner....
