"He called himself the King of the Jews. His disciples likely considered him the messiah, one who would bring about the end of days. Just after passover, the Romans ended his life outside Jerusalem. In the wake of his execution, his followers were among 2,000 Jews killed. His name was not Jesus, it was Simon and he lived before Jesus was ever born."

thus begins the documentary I'm watching this morning. I have this vague feeling that I've seen this one before, but I'm intrigued all over again. The benefits of having a bad memory I guess.

I remember watching a show on the Discovery Channel that was about various unknown facts about Martyrs. It would spill about 7 min. worth on each one, unfortunately I forgot it's name. Anyways one of the Martyrs was Jesus and they stated that around the time of when Jesus was supposedly alive there were actually 3 Jesus's by name who lived.

That anyone of them had been rumored to be possible messiahs, even one had a carpenter's shop, another was a well known philosopher at the time, and the third did supposedly minor miracles as a child and became a well respected priest in the Pharisee ranks. Yet no noe alone could live up to the standards of the supposed Jesus Christ of the Bible.

Every age has its Messiahs. For us Pagans, Aradia would be one.
There are still miracle workers today but we are far too jaded and consider them fakes, liars and charlatans because whenever we dare to put our trust in one like that, we have been badly burned for it.
If a truly Divine Being came here today, I very much doubt anyone would believe in Her/Him.

I have read the bible several times and cannot think of when he called himself :King of the Jews." I thought that was what the Romans posted on his cross to mock him. Am I wrong?

You are correct, FOL. Jesus did not call himself the King of the Jews, that was a name given to him by those that mocked him.

Simon called himself the King of the Jews but Jesus never referred to himself that way, that is what FOL was saying.

Didn't the "Three Wise Men" give him that name because of the star? Later on he was mocked for it of course.

They said a king but I don't remember it being a king of the Jews. There were a lot of kings then but Rome hated kings. It was death for a king to enter the city of Rome except in chains. If you were head of a province and heard of an approaching king you would be very warry.

    Matthew 2:1-12 (New International Version)

1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

    (King James Version)
1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

If a truly divine being came here today, I believe it would be known. Even in this day and age people believe in magic and god and all that jazz anyway, so there is no reason why they wouldn't trust the words of someone divine. Especially since such a person would likely be different from the rest of us...

What makes you think this divine individual wouldn't be thrown in the mental institute or beat up or probed by scientists like an animal?

Exactly, Kaddam If this Being performed true miracles, then S/He would be examined to death by science and there would still be people who would doubt the divinity of the Being.

It depends which divine being shows up I suppose. If it's the only truly divine then the next time he comes physically into the world the skies will roll back and legions of angels and saints will come marching behind. Probably not much room for doubt or scientific experimentation in that instance.

If a divine being could be held by the government or scientists, or was not able to prove without a doubt they had powers, then I wouldn't consider them a divine being...

I am God WilV... I can prove it to.

    *strains*

That was me gesturing with my hand at the universe I created and all the things within it. (I only strained because I slept on a sofa last night and I'm no spring chicken)... I mean, the universe is proof enough for anyone right? Don't forget, the Bible is pretty old and I didn't think it necessary to tell people that in 2010 I'd be on Earth mocking my own followers as an Atheist with bad dental alignment.

All that sky rolling back stuff... You think I want to peel the atmosphere away just to say hi? That would be pretty insensitive wouldn't it? You think two attempts at human civilization weren't enough for me and in my omnipotence and omniscience that I would need to erase all of humanity but the chosen again? Do you know how messy the great flood was to tidy up afterwards? I mean I had to erase all evidence of it ever taking place just to fuck with you guys.

I'm not entirely certain, but I believe stars are supposed to symbolize balance of the four major elements. I wonder if the wise men came because they had visions of stars... along with visions that represented east. If not, then I'm assuming that wherever the wise men had hailed from, their knowledge in astrology was excellent - which is a bit of a surprise.
