Woodwives are part of Germanic folklore. They're generally benign faerie creatures, though they abhor human hullabaloo. It is said that the woodwives are so deeply connected to nature and the woods, that if a branch is twisted until it breaks off of a tree, a woodwife dies, somewhere.
They can be very giving and kind to those who are kind or helpful towards them.

So they're generally these happy little elf creatures. However, in this one book I was reading, it said that if a woodcutter ventured too deep, alone, into the forest, that the woodwives would attack him and rip his throat out.

Well, they ARE protectors of the forest. They're also known for assuming the forms of the wives of wayward men and having sex with them (no real reason was given for this that I could find, though).

I did read somewhere that they would give certain rewards to men in exchange for sexual favors.

Be careful when leaning too heavily against those trees!
You might produce a few accidental saplings!
