Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast

NEW ORLEANS, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.

The Coast Guard said no one was killed in the explosion, which was spotted by a commercial helicopter flying over the site Thursday morning. All 13 people aboard the rig have been accounted for, with one injury. The extent of the injury was not known.
......
The platform, known as Vermilion Oil Platform 380, was owned by Mariner Energy of Houston, according to a homeland security operations update obtained by The Associated Press. The platform was not producing oil and gas, according to the operations report.

Melissa Schwartz, spokeswoman for Bureau of Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement, said the platform was authorized to produce oil and gas at this water depth but had not been recently in active production.

God loves a good laugh

GOD ENJOYS A GOOD LAUGH!

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:
1. He called everyone brother.
2. He liked Gospel.
3. He didn't get a fair trial.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:
1. He went into His Father's business.
2. He lived at home until he was 33.
3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his Mother was sure He was God.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:
1. He talked with His hands.
2. He had wine with His meals.
3. He used olive oil.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian:
1. He never cut His hair.
2. He walked around barefoot all the time.
3. He started a new religion.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was an American Indian:
1. He was at peace with nature.
2. He ate a lot of fish.
3. He talked about the Great Spirit.

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:
1. He never got married.
2. He was always telling stories.
3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman:
1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food.
2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it.
3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do.

Can I get an AMEN!!

And, this is the important question: How often should a healthy person cry? (Once a month? A year? A week? Never?)

Also: Are there any legit biological effects of crying? Like, does it release endorphins or something? What's the physiological stuff going on with it?

Golfer's swing sparks 25-acre California blaze

http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/blog/devil_ball_golf/post/Golfer-s-swing-sparks-25-acre-California-blaze?urn=golf-266447

You can use a golf club for all kinds of non-golfy purposes -- walking stick, fishing rod, club, to name three. And now we can add to that list -- firestarter.

Over the weekend, a golfer's routine swing in the rough at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine, Calif., struck a rock. Not so different from the way you play, right? Only this time, the impact caused a spark, and the spark set off a blaze that eventually covered 25 acres, according to the Steven Buck, General Manager of Shady Canyon Golf Course, and required the efforts of 150 Orange County firefighters, writes the Associated Press.

Wow. And I felt bad the time I shanked a ball through the window of a house too close to the fairway. That was nothing compared to this!

The golfer's name is being withheld, which is probably for the best, and no charges are going to be filed. Fortunately, it all could have been much worse. As it was, the blaze required both helicopters and on-the-ground crews.

The conditions were ripe for a blaze, with dry brush from a recent heat wave just waiting for the right spark. Like, say, one caused by metal on rock.

And now, your turn. This is going to inspire a raft of bad Sportscenter-esque "When we say he set the course on fire, he really set the course on fire!" jokes. So let's get ahead of the curve. Best bad golf-and-fire-related pun in the comments wins a round of applause. Go!

So, as I wake up with my version of the "whiskey hangover" which, in truth, means I'm more cheerful than most people think should be allowed, I am curious, what's everyone's drink of choice?

I prefer whiskey of all types, but always fall back on a classic Bourbon. I'm starting to appreciate single malt scotches, but this is what you get offered in my home:

The infamous "Jack" and coke. Usually not with Jack Daniels.
Scotch on the Rocks.
Whiskey Sours
Occasionally specialty beers. Shiner and Sam Adams when its cooler, Dos Equis in the summer.
Something with Rum, if I am prepared to entertain.

The brands: Jim Beam Black Label, The Glenlivet, McCallen, Pendleton's Reserve, Capt. Morgan's Private Stock, Sailor Jerry's, and Dalwhinnie.

I have a fondness for good wine, but I don't know how to pick good wine, so I patiently wait for others to offer it.

Some people take their childhood, too seriously

http://rivals.yahoo....ghschool-266086

Now I do commend this dude because instead of remaining a criminal he tried to start a new life for himself. However there is a wrong way and a right way. Now I read some of the comments and I think ppl are taking this too seriously like they do their childhood.

Just think about it before you lose your mind over this idiot. Better he be doing this than sticking a gun in your face or in the face of your mom or dad or beloved one demanding money.

Now that I got this out in the open and dealt some with this article in the link, let's talk about the topic. Seriously why torture yourself or somebody else by talking about the "old days". You know them so-called "golden days.." think on this maybe you were worshipped or accepted as a kid, but seriously who gives a shit. Are you still getting the same treatment now? By the same ppl you grew up with?

Of course you're not. They moved on and you should too. Only ppl who are 100% losers now think about their "golden days" because let's be honest-you have a loser's lifestyle. You hate work, can't stand your kids, and your significant other is acting like a tazmanian devil biting you whether you're nice or mean. Instead of trying to better your life in some bareable way-you reminesque about the "golden days." What a waste of time.

You still have so much potential still and instead you waste valuable time on comparing your "golden days" to now. To be truthful, most likely you may have made up major parts of your "golden days" to stew in them as you compare a half truth-half fantasy to your life now.

Worse of all you come to ppl like me who you didn't really care about in "the golden days" while we were the losers and want to talk about them. Sorry, you freakin "golden day" nazi. While you ruled the "golden day" my six star loser butt was being put through a holocaust of my own. Those days were "golden" for you, but HELL for ppl like me. Get over it and move on.

Your "golden days" I'd like to forget myself.

Trouble sleeping?

I'm not having any severe issues but I've been experimenting with this out of curiosity. Just to sort of tinker. It's said that the intensity of your display right before sleep can cause issues with circadian rhythms essentially harming the quality and/or quantity of one's sleep. This utility attempts to counter this by essentially changing the intensity of the display at night.

The first night it seemed that it might have helped some. Tonight though I'm unsure. I'm feeling more tired than usual earlier but also with a headache. I'm unsure if this is due to the reddish tint it creates or more due to coming down with something....

In any event it's an interesting little utility and it is highly configurable so I thought I'd share in case anyone finds it interesting. I understand some Apple devices have a sort of ambient light adjustment built in to serve this function somewhat?
I put my shepherd in his kennel and went to see about the little dog. It's Pomeranian with tags. I petted it and it squealed like I hit it. I was very gentle.

It ran under my car.
I took some water and food out for it.

I've been recently messing around with my blog and trying to bring it up to date and make the posts on it more regular and more light hearted. Few days back I posted up an article I'd written a few months ago I'd written for my university's satirical newspaper, a piece about creationism. A site called Liberal Values Blog has just done a post on said article and my blog viewings have jumped from around 300 to just shy of 800 in the space of about 2 hours. I'm really quite pleased about it all.
You can find my article here: http://sleepingunderenon.wordpress.com/2010/08/26/creationists-didnt-evolve-from-apes-they-havent-evolved-at-all/
Or, you can see it on their website (it's a few paragraphs of the full article): http://liberalvaluesblog.com/2010/08/30/creationists-were-right-in-denying-that-they-have-evolved/

Weird News of the Week

Though most victims seemed baffled or distressed by the behavior of Sherwin Shayegan, 27, another thought him "completely harmless." From time to time (allegedly dating to at least 2006), Shayegan befriends high-school male athletes, questions them as a reporter would, and finally, jumps on their backs and demands "piggyback" rides. No other overtures are made, and the principal complaint about Shayegan, after the shock wears off, seems to be his obnoxiousness. His latest arrest took place in May in Tualatin, Ore., near his earlier haunts in Washington state. [Tigard Times (Tigard, Ore.), 5-6-10]

More British Welfare Spongers: In May, the Daily Mail profiled the Houghtons of Crawley, West Sussex (Lee, 42, and Jane and their five youngest children), who live in free government housing and draw monthly benefits of the equivalent of about $1,600, without doing a bit of work -- because Lee has a "personality disorder" and daughter Chelsea, 16, has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and needs a caretaker to help with her baby. The Houghtons admit that they spoil their kids at Christmas with lavish gifts, and the reporter noted the presence of four TVs, two Xboxes, three DVD players, mobile phones for everyone, and a computer and laptop. Lee is unpopular with his neighbors, who call the police on him frequently because of his drinking. Said Lee, "If people want to work, good for them. I would if I could...." [Daily Mail, 5-5-10]

And in July, Lora Hunt, 49, was sentenced to 18 months in jail in the crash that killed a woman on a motorcycle in Lake County, Ill., in 2009. Hunt was so preoccupied painting her nails (polish was splashed all over the car's interior) that she never even moved to apply the brakes before the collision. [Chicago Sun-Times, 7-22-10]

On the other hand, Amanda McBride, 29, is such an excellent multitasker that she was able to drive herself to the hospital in Bemidji, Minn., in May while giving birth. (Her husband was in the front seat but, seizure-prone, he does not drive.) The child emerged just as Amanda pulled into the hospital parking lot. "(H)e just slid out," she said. "It really wasn't bad at all." [Bemidji Pioneer, 5-23-10]

Face Tattoos Still a Handicap for Criminals: Royce Spottedbird Jr., 23, apparently once thought it cool to have his name tattooed on his neck. However, when he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop in April in Butte, Mont., and feared a warrant might be out on him, he gave the officer a bogus name. When he could not explain what "Royce Spottedbird Jr." was doing on his neck, he was detained for obstruction of justice and eventually pleaded guilty. (And he was wrong about the warrant.)
Pickled Punks

Have you heard this term before? I hadn't. I was aware of the fetus in a jar, in labs and horror movies, etc... but hadn't heard this term to refer to them.

The practice of preserving and displaying prodigious births is centuries old. In the 17th century King Frederick III of Denmark had a personal collection of punks numbering in the thousands - a collection started in the 16th century by Frederick II. And during that same timeframe Ulisse Aldrovandi, an Italian naturalist, had a collection consisting of eighteen thousand various specimens.

The Stone Child of Sens

The earliest and most well documented pedigree for a deformed punk display dates back to 1582 when Mme Colombe Chatri died at the age of sixty-eight, and a twenty-eight year old fetus was removed from her womb. The "Stone-Child of Sens" should have been born in 1554; however, labor came and went with no delivery and in the resulting decades the fetus calcified and ossified within the womb, which actually formed a shell. Mme Chatri seemed to have lived a normal life, with the exception of regular abdominal pains.

Internet wiping out printed Oxford Dictionary

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100829/ap_on_re_eu/eu_britain_dictionary_s_demise

LONDON – It's been in print for over a century, but in future the Oxford English Dictionary — the authoritative guide to the English language — may only be available to peruse online.

Publisher Oxford University Press said Sunday that burgeoning demand for the dictionary's online version has far outpaced demand for the printed versions. By the time the lexicographers behind the dictionary finished revising and updating the latest edition — a gargantuan task that will take many more years — publishers are doubtful there will still be a market for the printed form.

The online Oxford English Dictionary now gets 2 million hits a month from subscribers. The current printed edition — a hefty 20-volume, 750 pound ($1,165) set published in 1989 — has sold about 30,000 sets in total.

"At present we are experiencing increasing demand for the online product," a statement from the publisher said. "However a print version will certainly be considered if there is sufficient demand at the time of publication."

Nigel Portwood, chief executive of Oxford University Press, told The Sunday Times in an interview he didn't think the newest edition will be printed. "The print dictionary market is just disappearing, it is falling away by tens of percent a year," he said.

Although the comments relate primarily to the full-length dictionary, the publisher says the convenience of the electronic format is also affecting demand for its shorter dictionaries.

I'm watching something on HBO called, "If God is Willing & Da Creek Don't Rise," which gives ground-shaking insight on what was happening before and after Katrina. I really suggest anyone watching it who can...
http://images.travelpod.com/users/kwmg/1.1267468730.67_.jpg

Quote

Tom Darden: Well, as you probably know, Brad Pitt loves New Orleans. He and his family consider New Orleans home, and like so many Americans, they were motivated to do something to help out after Hurricane Katrina. And having seen the lack of response by the government and the lack of effectiveness of some of the NGOs in the recovery, Brad wanted to do something to help out.

But he didn't want to just rebuild houses that were the same as the houses that were there before the storm. He wanted to build houses that were safer, better constructed (so that they're protected against future storms), and that are healthy for the families that live in them. So they're designed around their needs, by some of the most amazing architects in the world.

He wanted to help rebuild a community that was one of the most devastated and really make a statement about the way that houses could and should be built. He selected an area that was totally wiped out, that way if we could figure out how to make this area a model for sustainable rebuilding, then we could do it anywhere.

These houses are built with an architecturally high design; so that in case the dam breaks again, people can flee to their roofs. Many families died being caught in their attic not being able to reach their roofs. These houses are all state-of-the-art, designed by architects that Brad Pitt admires. Their homes are energy efficient and "Green"- they all have solar panels. Better yet; families who are accepted into this program have a mortgage that is only 30% of their annual income.

To me, this is so sexy and good; men & women who have the means to make a difference- and do so. Their efforts are rebuilding families, and giving back to those who cannot always help themselves. They aren't deterred by the fact this was a low-income area, largely african american & below sea level- they just see the suffering, and want to help make it stop. I can sleep better at night knowing that projects like this exist, and that men & women who can help make the world a better place- do so.

Answer what you're comfortable answering, or all of these, or none of these. Or make up your own questions.
Did you play tabletop or board games? Did you read out loud to each other, or were you read to? Did the power ever go out in your house during a thunderstorm, and you lit candles and told each other spooky stories? Did you go on vacations together? Did you take walks together?

Did you all eat together, around a table, for breakfast? Or dinner, or lunch, whatever?

What did they teach you? How to whistle? How to ride a bike? How to fly a kite? Or what else?

Did you tell each other what you dreamed about? Did you talk about books you were reading? Do you have any family recipes?

Did anyone ever help you move into a new place, when you were older? Does your family check in on you? Do you check in on them? If you had nowhere in the world to go, do you have family members who would take you in until you got back on your feet? If you were going through a crisis of some kind, do you have family you would turn to for help? Or, vice versa- would you take in a family member if they needed a place to stay, and would you help a family member going through a crisis?

Did your parents go to your school play or your soccer games or your concerts?
Did they sing you lullabies? Did they tell you nursery rhymes?

Your brave new world ...

Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway — and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.

That is the bizarre — and scary — rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants — with no need for a search warrant.

It is a dangerous decision — one that, as the dissenting judges warned, could turn America into the sort of totalitarian state imagined by George Orwell. It is particularly offensive because the judges added insult to injury with some shocking class bias: the little personal privacy that still exists, the court suggested, should belong mainly to the rich.
0. Introduction

Welcome to the 3rd Darkness Newsletter!!!

I've tried hard to get this out every month or so. I checked to see when the last one was sent out and what do you know, it has been 2 years! Time flies when you're procrastinating doesn't it? Things have changed a bit in the forum layout. It's simpler and the conversations are better now that we've gotten rid of that Canadian admin. Oh, the drama! Just kidding, we love you Skadi.

**********
1. Darkness Gathering

One of the important issues is this years Darkness Gathering. We've been trying to do this every year for .. well, years. Everyone meets at a predetermined location and has a lot of fun mingling. It's like a convention except we all sit around an ominous black object and plan global domination. You can find out more about this at the link below. Please RSVP if you can by posting in the topic.
http://forum.darkness.com/topic/114001-darkness-gathering-2010/

2. Your very own Darkness Email Account

Did you know we're still giving away yourname@darkness.com email addresses (powered by Google Mail or Gmail)? Let us know if you want one. Send an email to mail@darkness.com and someone will take care of that for you.

**********
3. Radio Darkness

Still on the air. Still going strong. Still getting dozens of listeners. Still have no DJs. We've scared them off with our apathy and lack of adoration. Our website hasn't been updated in awhile but the music has. The site has info on genres, bands, and other stations who play the type of music you might like; dark, gothic, metal, horror, etc... Stop by and check us out.

http://radio.darkness.com/

Our station can now be heard on your PSP, and even on your Nokia phone. See the site for more details. As always, if you're in a band and would like to get your song aired on Darkness' very own radio station, stop by and leave an email to radio@darkness.com telling us a little bit about your band and where we can find an mp3.

4. Darkness Shirts

Sorry, we're all sold out! You can still check with shadoman@darkness.com just in case. Maybe he'll sell you the shirt off his back. Yes, he's just that nice!

Life Returns to Ground Zero

Signs Of Life To Arrive At 9/11 Memorial

ULA ILNYTZKY | 08/28/10 07:54 AM |

NEW YORK — After nearly nine years, life is returning to ground zero in a tangible way.

Sixteen swamp white oaks arriving Saturday are the first of nearly 400 trees that will be planted at the World Trade Center site, where more than 2,700 people were killed when terrorists attacked the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

The trees will dot a cobblestone plaza surrounding two huge pools built on the footprints of the destroyed towers.

"After all the tragedy, the idea of the first living component going back is emotionally significant to the rebuilding process," said Tom Cox, CEO of Environmental Design, the Houston company that has cared for the trees and is taking them to the trade center site.

Cultivated for four years at a nursery in Millstone, N.J., the 16 trees were to be loaded onto eight tractor-trailers at midnight Friday for the 35-mile trip to Manhattan. Cranes were to set them into place Saturday morning before crews plant them on the eight-acre memorial plaza.

Joe Daniels, president of the memorial foundation, called the trees' arrival "a big milestone ... after nine years of both recovery and construction."

Designers Peter Walker and Michael Arad envisioned a peaceful green space that would bring solace to visitors. Benches are an invitation to linger amid a walk along the cobblestone and stone pavers accented with plants.

The memorial plaza will essentially become a rooftop garden, built atop the deep chasm left by the destroyed towers. It will cover the museum commemorating the 2001 attacks, commuter train platforms and a parking garage that are being built as far as 70 feet below ground.

Signs Of Life To Arrive At 9/11 Memorial

The Russians completed a memorial to victims of 9/11 nearly four years ago at Bayonne Harbor, NJ.

The memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2006 in a ceremony attended by former President Bill Clinton. Also in attendance were Michael Chertoff, the Bush Adminstration Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and family members of World Trade Center victims. Recording artist Leann Rimes sang the National Anthem and Amazing Grace at the dedication ceremony.

Your mind is rotting.

Quote

I’ve been studying this research for the past three years, in the course of writing my new book The Shallows: How the Internet Is Changing the Way We Think, Read and Remember. But my interest in the subject is not just academic. It’s personal. I was inspired to write the book after I realised that I was losing my own capacity for concentration and contemplation. Even when I was away from my computer, my mind seemed hungry for constant stimulation, for quick hits of information. I felt perpetually distracted.

Could my loss of focus be a result of all the time I’ve spent online? In search of an answer to that question, I began to dig into the many psychological, behavioural, and neurological studies that examine how the tools we use to think with — our information technologies — shape our habits of mind.

Quote

Greenfield concluded that “every medium develops some cognitive skills at the expense of others”. Our growing use of screen-based media, she said, has strengthened visual-spatial intelligence, which can strengthen the ability to do jobs that involve keeping track of lots of rapidly changing signals, like piloting a plane or monitoring a patient during surgery. But that has been accompanied by “new weaknesses in higher-order cognitive processes,” including “abstract vocabulary, mindfulness, reflection, inductive problem solving, critical thinking, and imagination.” We’re becoming, in a word, shallower.

Quote

What we seem to be sacrificing in our surfing and searching is our capacity to engage in the quieter, attentive modes of thought that underpin contemplation, reflection and introspection. The web never encourages us to slow down. It keeps us in a state of perpetual mental locomotion. The rise of social networks like Facebook and Twitter, which pump out streams of brief messages, has only exacerbated the problem.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet/7967894/How-the-Internet-is-making-us-stupid.html

I agree with the article. I've noticed it as well. When say skimming Reddit (especially) or browsing the internet in general I'm often in a sort of "perpetual skim mode". It wasn't as much of an issue in the past I believe because I seem to have ran into less information that I found "interesting". But now with better efficiency and more information it would seem that I'm always bombarded with interesting things at any given moment. So I tend to compensate by skimming things and quickly assessing a piece of information in a small amount of time. No deep analysis occurs unless the information is extremely interesting relative to the other things. And this seems to be less and less over time.

I've considered some ways to help counter this.

1. When seeing something interesting avoid the temptation to just skim it. Force yourself to focus upon it and make an effort to concentrate and see it completely through. If time is an issue come up with some kind of queuing system where you can place it for later when time allows.

2. If you ever find your mind resisting something -- say out of some vague sense of laziness, counter by immediately doing it. I've noticed that giving in seems to cause the problem to become much worse.

Thoughts or observations on this besides TL/DR? By the way, 1000 bonus points if you actually read the entire article and post. When the aliens come to take over at least there will be a few without mush minds.
