Analysis: Greece's crisis could presage America's

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100310/ap_on_an/us_power_and_debt_analysis

WASHINGTON – Greece is a financial basket case, begging for international help. Is America heading down that same road?

Many of the same risky financial practices that now imperil the Greeks were at the center of the all-too-recent U.S. meltdown.

As with Greece, America's national debt has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past decade, to the point where it threatens to swamp overall economic output. And in the U.S., as in Greece, a large portion of that debt is owed to foreign investors.

Not good, if these debt holders begin to wonder if they'll be paid back. A foreign flight from U.S. Treasury securities could sow financial chaos in the United States, as happened when many investors lost faith in Greek bonds.

It's something that could affect all Americans. The U.S. has never defaulted on a debt, and even the hint of such a possibility could send interest rates soaring and choke off a fragile recovery.
....
After all, Spain dominated the 16th century world, France the 17th century and Great Britain much of the 18th and 19th before the United States rose to supremacy in the 20th century.

"Unless we do things dramatically different, including strengthening our investments in research and education, the 21st century will belong to China and India," suggests Norman Augustine, the former CEO of Lockheed Martin who chaired a 2009 bipartisan commission studying the nation's top challenges.

China and India as world powers? We would truly be fucked then.

"Mommy...this one vibrates?"

I've had a full house today, my son Mikael brought over his best friend Sylvester, Delia had her best friend Maja here, and the Sylvester's mother came to cut all kids' hair and dye them funky colours. Majas father also showed up later on to pick up his daughter. For a while there were people everywhere in my apartment. At some point the remote control to my brand new mediabox disappeared, so everyone started searching, and then the guests left.

About three minutes after they were all out the door, while the kids and I kept searching for the remote, I noticed Mikael was oddly quiet somewhere. I called for him, and then he came slowly out of my bedroom, where the remote was NOT supposed to ber, holding something easily recognisable and bright purple.

With the undying, slightly surprised words: "Mommy, this one vibrates?"

Oh. My. God.

How the hell am I supposed to respond? I tried to be calm, said "yes darling, it does. Now put it right back." And remembered how that drawer had been slightly ajar even earlier.

If he had come out with it just a little earlier, while the others were still here, I would probably have found a way to kill myself with it. Now I can only pray he forgets the entire episode before he gets old enough to realise what it is. And that my daughter, who saw the whole thing and didn't mention it with a word, has a sudden loss of memory during the night.

So what's your most mortifying moment? I need to hear your worst right now.

It's so fascinating, and so respectful towards all the people featured it just makes your heart squeal. I can spend hours clicking from story to story about all the amazing and truly unique sideshow artists. From conjoined twins to midgets to people with three legs or 16 fingers. And the layout is beautiful.

Program Will Pay Homeowners to Sell at a Loss

http://finance.yahoo.com/real-estate/article/109009/program-will-pay-homeowners-to-sell-at-a-loss

In an effort to end the foreclosure crisis, the Obama administration has been trying to keep defaulting owners in their homes. Now it will take a new approach: paying some of them to leave.

This latest program, which will allow owners to sell for less than they owe and will give them a little cash to speed them on their way, is one of the administration's most aggressive attempts to grapple with a problem that has defied solutions.

More than five million households are behind on their mortgages and risk foreclosure. The government's $75 billion mortgage modification plan has helped only a small slice of them. Consumer advocates, economists and even some banking industry representatives say much more needs to be done.

For the administration, there is also the concern that millions of foreclosures could delay or even reverse the economy's tentative recovery -- the last thing it wants in an election year.

Taking effect on April 5, the program could encourage hundreds of thousands of delinquent borrowers who have not been rescued by the loan modification program to shed their houses through a process known as a short sale, in which property is sold for less than the balance of the mortgage. Lenders will be compelled to accept that arrangement, forgiving the difference between the market price of the property and what they are owed.

Sounds good in theory but will it really work?

Defaulted Loans May Haunt Seniors

A little–noticed law could soon result in smaller Social Security checks for hundreds of thousands of the elderly and disabled who owe the U.S. money from defaulted loans and other debts more than a decade old.

Social Security benefits are off–limits to creditors, such as credit–card companies and banks. But the U.S. can collect debts to federal agencies by "offsetting," or withholding Social Security and disability payments.

The Treasury currently withholds benefits of 3.1 million Social Security recipients to recover defaulted student–, farm– and small–business loans, unpaid income taxes, amounts veterans owe for health care, and other debts to the government.

Previously, the U.S. hasn't been able to withhold Social Security payments to recover most debts delinquent for more than ten years.

But a provision in the 2008 Farm Bill lifted the ten–year statute of limitations on the government's ability to withhold Social Security benefits in collecting debts other than student loans—for which the statute of limitations was lifted in 1997—and income taxes, where the limit remains 10 years.

DETROIT – Detroit, the very symbol of American industrial might for most of the 20th century, is drawing up a radical renewal plan that calls for turning large swaths of this now-blighted, rusted-out city back into the fields and farmland that existed before the automobile.

Operating on a scale never before attempted in this country, the city would demolish houses in some of the most desolate sections of Detroit and move residents into stronger neighborhoods. Roughly a quarter of the 139-square-mile city could go from urban to semi-rural.

Near downtown, fruit trees and vegetable farms would replace neighborhoods that are an eerie landscape of empty buildings and vacant lots. Suburban commuters heading into the city center might pass through what looks like the countryside to get there. Surviving neighborhoods in the birthplace of the auto industry would become pockets in expanses of green.

Holes in Earth's magnetic cloak let the sun in

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE4BF79220081216

Understanding how these holes form will help them better predict the electrical storms that cause power grid blackouts and the aurora, activity that will peak in 2012 as sunspots hit their maximum level.

Scientists at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco said they had been entirely wrong about how solar particles that cause the storms were entering the Earth's magnetosphere.

The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind.

Scientists once believed that the particles entered when the sun's magnetic field was aligned opposite to that of the Earth's. But findings presented at the meeting show that 20 times more solar particles enter the Earth's magnetic field when it is aligned in the same direction as the sun's magnetic field.

The alignment causes the two magnetic fields to connect and tears holes in the Earth's magnetic field over the poles.

"What we observed was the breach in the levee," said Jimmy Raeder, a physicist at the University of New Hampshire. "This has taken us completely by surprise."

In June 2007, NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft probes flew through one of the tears just as it was opening. Sensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into the magnetosphere, said Raeder.

"The opening was huge -- four times wider than Earth itself," said Raeder. "This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible."

Most of the particles are deflected back into space, but some circulate in the magnetosphere, get energized, and cause electrical storms that trigger power grid outages, cause problems for aircraft flying over the poles, and can damage satellites in geosynchronous orbit.

"There's a bigger risk because we have more stuff in space now," said Raeder.

Scientists said that the majority of solar storms take place midway through and on the tail end of the solar cycle. This 11-year cycle of activity is at its minimum now and electrical storms will be at their peak in 2012.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – U.S. researchers estimate that an 18 percent tax on pizza and soda can push down U.S. adults' calorie intake enough to lower their average weight by 5 pounds (2 kg) per year.

The researchers, writing in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine on Monday, suggested taxing could be used as a weapon in the fight against obesity, which costs the United States an estimated $147 billion a year in health costs.

"While such policies will not solve the obesity epidemic in its entirety and may face considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers, they could prove an important strategy to address overconsumption, help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among U.S. adults," wrote the team led by Kiyah Duffey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

With two-thirds of Americans either overweight or obese, policymakers are increasingly looking at taxing as a way to address obesity on a population level.

California and Philadelphia have introduced legislation to tax soft drinks to try to limit consumption.

CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden supports taxes on soft drinks, as does the American Heart Association.

There are early signs that such a policy works.

Over-Connecting the Dots: At age 8, Mike Hicks is a frequent air traveler with his mother, and while she is seldom noticed by airport screeners, "Mikey" almost always is because he shares a name with someone on the enhanced-security list that is one level below "no fly" (one of 1,600 such Michael Hickses in the U.S.). His mom told The New York Times in January that Mikey has been patted down by security since he was 2. [New York Times, 1-14-10]
In August 1994, Sanford, Fla., judge Newman Brock picked up hair clippers and went to the local Seminole County Jail for his regular biweekly haircut from his longtime hairstylist, Rick Thrower, who was serving 45 days for DUI violations. Said Thrower, "(The judge is) a very loyal customer." [Orlando Sentinel, 8-5-94]
They Don't Make Cops Like They Used To: Sheriff's deputy John Franklin of San Luis Obispo, Calif., filed a lawsuit in December against the Catholic Church and former priest Geronimo Cuevas for the "emotional trauma" he suffered by being propositioned for sex while working undercover in 2007. Deputy Franklin was patrolling a public park near Avila Beach when Father Cuevas reached out and touched Franklin's clothed genital area. Cuevas was arrested and convicted, but Deputy Franklin said he is not yet over the feelings of "anger, rage, disgust and embarrassment." [CalCoastNews.com, 12-29-09]

I had some frozen chicken breasts and thought I'd find a quick recipe so I didn't have to fuss much over it. I was skeptical at first about microwave chicken, but now that I'm eating it I'm surprised how nice it is. All I did was take a mostly thawed chicken breast, add it to a microwave safe dish with 1 cup of chicken broth and cooked it on high for about 8 minutes. I had sprinkled some lemon pepper and cayenne on it first. I boiled some broccoli while it was in the microwave and it's a nice quick easy and tasty dish.

The mannequin or the second skin

Quote

THE MANNEQUIN OR THE SECOND SKIN

The "sexual revolution" was nothing but a neutralisation of all sexuality by its extension to all significations. It is a spectable, an imperative, an advertisement, the fetishes are no longer private or anti-social as in de Sade - they are compulsory, they are normalised, they are transparent. Transparency is not a radical idea but a fundamental demand of the system today. Michel Foucault in the History of Sexuality (vol. 1) shows how all sexuality including deviations are "confessed" so that the code can be total. Read Penthouse, Forum. Every sexual possibility is catalogued on some cheap porno movie to be reproduced by us in our pravate lives.

The body has become entirely sexualised / but sex without qualities. Nudity is sexually redundant, the body having passed to a mannequin to focus signs, clothing, restaurant, car etc. The body is fetished as a manipulation of masks, the idea of the optimum body, become nothing but the "you" of the advertisement - fragmented and reconstituted as a model.

Both sexes suffer from this manipulation, women because their bodies are the primary locus of transformation (from adornment, to diets and "beauty" treatments, to plastic surgery). Men, because their aesthetic and sexual response is conditioned by the repetition of the image of the "preffered" body.

That this ideal has changed historically, several times even in the last century, is proof enough that there can be no standard measure of beauty in any sense, visual or by extension aural (musical). From the plump Victorian women on postcards from the era, through the thin 20's, the busty, pinched waists of the 50's and now the work-out bodies of the 80's we are either being pressured to conform or to respond uniformity to what we see.

Purely by repetition and the complex web of sexual signs and social significations surrounding this display it is almost impossible to avoid being seduced by the common denominator. And we must never forget the real damage being done to the very lives of those who don't or can't approximate the dominant model.

SPK's film and visual displays of less than perfect bodies is juxtaposition with the iconographic type brings into focus a question of the very basis of our aesthetic and sexual judgements. This is not a freak show or a horror show but a confrontation of the dominant sexual aesthetic with its own by-product or reverse angle - a challenge to re-evaluate our narrow judgemental perspective, closely linked as it is simply to perpetuating the consumption cycle.

FACT

I went to college set on only testing the waters and concentrating on accomplishing financial means in my life. It is the middle of the semester @ IUP and even though it maybe late being halfway through the semester I'm getting use to the lifestyle of college. I'm catching up on reading 3 books which the reports for are due in April and the first two weeks when I began I was so confused I missed out on Homework and quizzes, but now I'm doing both. So Hopefully I pull through the semester without getting an overall D average (which I'm pretty sure I'll achieve straight Cs).

What surprised my is that without even trying some peers in my classes seem to want to hangout with me. I didn't go to college to make friends, but to build my reputation and prestige. However I am not complaining about it, only am surprised knowing most of my fellow freshmen are straight out of high school.

Did something happen? Did they install behavior chips within high school students now? Its very interesting considering when I was in high school the predominant focus in it was social politics of position within society which I were rated very low just because of what I looked like, where I cam from, and how I would dress.

You can't tell me people mature quickly within 5 yrs. Are we being replaced by pod people? Anywho it is very refreshing considering the harsh realities I were faced with when I went to high school to actually think maybe our societys' values may have transformed with the focus on more intellectual things instead of the carnal materiality it once held within its schools.

(Then again we are in College.)

But she's gorgeous, intelligent & she 'gets me'.
What do I do? How do I figure out if she'd be open to this sort of thing, without scaring her off? Or, should I not say/do anything & just remain platonic friends?

Harsh

This was on the BBC news site yesterday.

Quote

BBC Radio producer jailed over sex tapes

A BBC radio producer who secretly filmed himself having sex with five different women has been jailed for eight months.

Inner London Crown Court heard Benjamin Wilkins was caught when his girlfriend found a stash of DVDs in his loft.

Judge Roger Chapple told Wilkins he had "betrayed" the trust of his victims.

The 37-year-old secretly taped a series of sexual liaisons with lovers, including TV and radio presenters, using a hidden camera in his bedroom.

The court heard he hid one camera in his bathroom and another in the fire alarm directly above a bed in his London flat.

'Dirty and sick'

They were linked to his computer which allowed him to transfer the films to DVD.

The sex tapes were made over a three-year period from 2005, but Wilkins dismantled the system before his girlfriend, with whom he had a son, moved into the home.

His girlfriend found and watched a film, then sent it to the woman involved who decided to go to the police.

A victim impact statement made by one of the women, who can not be identified, was read to the court.

She said she was too ashamed to tell her family what had happened, adding it left her "feeling violated, dirty and sick" and needing counselling after she found out what he had done.

The judge said the effect on the women that had been filmed had to be considered when sentencing Wilkins.

He added: "What you did represents a cruel, selfish betrayal of the trust they put in you."

Wilkins pleaded guilty to 11 charges of voyeurism at Camberwell Magistrates' Court earlier this year.

Nicola Kay, defending Wilkins, said: "Of course, he has had to inform his own family which has been a shock for his elderly mother."

He has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Now, this strikes me as an incredibly harsh punishment, not in keeping with the crime he committed whatsoever in my opinion. From reading the article, the guy wasn't showing off the recordings to anyone, they were kept for his own private 'entertainment', it's not as if he was seeing anything that the women involved hadn't already shown him (presumably in a willing and enthusiastic manner). A slap on the wrist, with some community service - yes, but jail time and 10 years on the sex offenders register? Jesus Christ that's brutal!

The other thing that annoyed me about the whole story was the reaction of one of the guys co-stars, saying that she felt "violated, dirty and sick" and had to have counselling when she found out (a couple of years after the event) that she had been filmed. Now the article doesn't go into that level of detail as to what they got up to, but why is she feeling so horrified that the guy filmed it? After all, he was there when she voluntarily did whatever she did, he wasn't showing all his mates what she got up to, so strictly speaking he could replay the events in his own mind at any point in time he wished - with her doing more and more wild and wonderful things if he so desired.

Roughly 2 million years ago, the Taylor Glacier sealed beneath it a small body of water which contained an ancient community of microbes. Trapped below a thick layer of ice, they have remained there ever since, isolated inside a natural time capsule. Evolving independently of the rest of the living world, these microbes exist without heat, light, or oxygen, and are essentially the definition of "primordial ooze." The trapped lake has very high salinity and is rich in iron, which gives the waterfall its red color.
BARCELONA, Spain – Monstrous waves that smashed into a Mediterranean cruise ship flooded people's cabins, broke windows in a restaurant and sent terrified travelers screaming for doctors, passengers said Thursday.

Claude Cremex, 73, of Marseille, France said he was in his cabin resting because of rough seas when the walls of water hit the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty, which was carrying 1,350 passengers and 580 crew members off the coast of northeastern Spain.

"A lot of water came in. Many cabins were flooded," said Cremex, who was traveling with his wife. "Many people were very frightened," he told The Associated Press.

Cremex said he did not see the waves himself but later viewed the damage. "It was spectacular," he said as the ship sat docked at Barcelona's port with passengers sunning themselves on deck the day after the accident.

Amateur video footage taken by a passenger and aired on Spanish television showed the instant when a huge, foamy wave hit what appeared to be a restaurant or lounge area, blowing out the window, triggering screams and sending shin-high water gushing along the floor. A woman is heard crying in the background.
'Well, I can think of one thing,' the cowboy offered. On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota I came upon a gang of bikers, who I thought were harassing a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face ... kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, 'Now, back off or I'll kick the crap out of all of you!' St. Peter was impressed, 'When did this happen?'

Well, I suppose I should just get right to the heart of it.

My older bro keeps in contact with his girlfriend while in basic training. And since she gets more information from him than we do, she comes by from time to time so she can keep us informed.

She came over today, bearing 3 weird bits of news.
______________________________________________
1. My brother purposed to her in a letter home. That isn't entirely unexpected, but it is weird, because his current girlfriend is the Older sister of my first girlfriend. and it's odd to think that in one family is the first girl I ever loved, and the last my brother ever will.

2. The younger sister of our guest, and the first love of my life is pregnant. The father wants nothing to do with the child, but I feel so old to think that a girlfriend of mine is about to be a mother.

3. My older brother wants me to be the best man in his w3dding.
I know it sounds odd to think of that as weird news, but noone in my family really talks to eachother, and my brother is so loyal to his friends that he joined the army when they decided too. I always figures I'd be a groomsman, but in his letter home he said he refused to Elope, because I couldn't be his best man that way. And he said that to the woman he wants to make his wife, he had no Idea I was going to read it.

Jean (or Juan) Baptista dos Santos is said to have been a “Gipsey”, born in Faro, Portugal around 1843, to normal parents with two other normal children. His career as an exhibitionist seems to have been confined strictly to medical circles; in 1865 turned down a sum of 200,000 francs to appear for two years with a French circus. He possessed two functioning penes and three scrota, the outer two of which each contained a single testis. Dos Santos claimed that the central scrotum had also contained a pair of fully-formed testes, but that these had retreated into his abdomen when he was ten years old.

Top 10 Signs Of Evolution In Modern Man

http://listverse.com/2009/01/05/top-10-signs-of-evolution-in-modern-man/

Jacobson’s organ is a fascinating part of animal anatomy and it tells us a lot about our own sexual history. The organ is in the nose and it is a special “smell” organ which detects pheromones (the chemical that triggers sexual desire, alarm, or information about food trails). It is this organ that allows some animals to track others for sex and to know of potential dangers. Humans are born with the Jacobson’s organ, but in early development its abilities dwindle to a point that it is useless. Once upon a time, humans would have used this organ to locate mates when communication was not possible. Single’s evenings, chat rooms, and bars have now taken its place in the process of human mate-seeking.

I know that snakes have Jacobsons' organ and rely on it but I did not know that humans have it.

While many of the hangovers from our “devolved” past are visible or physical, this is not true for all. Humans have structures in their genetic make-up that were once used to produces enzymes to process vitamin C (it is called L-gulonolactone oxidase). Most other animals have this functioning DNA but at some point in our history, a mutation disbled the gene – whilst leaving behind its remnants as junk DNA. This particular junk DNA indicates a common ancestry with other species on earth, so it is particularly interesting.

I wonder what would happen if we were able to reactivate our "junk DNA".

Darwin’s point is found in the majority of mammals, and humans are no exception. It is most likely used to help focus sounds in animals, but it no longer has a function in humans. Only 10.4% of the human population still has this visible left-over mark of our past, but it is possible that a much larger number of people carry the gene that produces it as it does not always cause the ear tubercle to appear. The point (shown in the picture above) is a small thick nodule at the junction of the upper and middle sections of the ear.

1. The second Longest geographical name that is accepted in the world is “Taumatawhakatangihangak oauauotamateaturipukaka pikimaungahoronukupokaiwhe nua kitanatahu” (85 letters) which is a hill in New Zealand – it is a maori phrase which translates to “place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as land-eater, played his flute to his loved one”. It was the longest until recently (though the Guinness Book of Records still regards it as the longest); it has most likely now been supplanted by Krung thep maha nakorn amorn ratana kosinmahintar ayutthay amaha dilok phop noppa ratrajathani burirom udom rajaniwesmahasat harn amorn phimarn avatarn sathit sakkattiya visanukamprasit in Thailand (163 letters).

3. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll llantysiliogogogoch is the longest village name in the world (and third longest geographical name). it is located in Wales, and yes there are four l’s in a row!
Can anyone here pronounce those names?

4. The Shortest place name is ‘Å’ it is located in both Sweden and Norway. In Scandinavian languages, ‘Å’ means “river”. The image above is one of the newly replaces road signs for the area – they are frequently stolen for their novelty value.

Alaska is unique because: 10. Alaska is the most Northern, Eastern, AND Western state in all of America. It is the only state that enters the “Eastern Hemisphere” making it also the most eastern lying and western lying state.

There has been a lot of chatter going on about repealing gay marriage lately. The Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs are making plans for this repeal. President Obama is all behind it. And they can't actually do shit. Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) is a law, not some regulation or policy that the military clinges to. Only two organizations can get rid of DADT. One is Congress and the other is the Supreme Court. The majority of Americans, even broken down by political party and on the military, support the repeal of DADT. Congress is a colossal cluster fuck, so I would really prefer to see the damn thing struck down by the Supreme Court. That's the only sure fire way considering the thing is unconstitutional as hell.

So any campaign promises made about this repeal are bullshit because Congress can still fuck it up. I'm just sick of certain people calling me homophobic because I am in the military.

The fault has been dormant for more than 300 years, but when it awakens — tomorrow or decades from now — the consequences could be devastating.
Recent computer simulations of a hypothetical magnitude-9 quake found that shaking could last 2 to 5 minutes — strong enough to potentially cause poorly constructed buildings from British Columbia to Northern California to collapse and severely damage highways and bridges.
Vast amounts of telephone and e-mail data held in Germany must be deleted, the country's highest court has ruled.

The constitutional court overturned a 2008 law requiring communications data to be kept for six months.

The law - designed to combat terrorism and serious crime - required telecoms companies to keep logs of calls, faxes, SMS messages, e-mails and internet use.

But nearly 35,000 Germans lodged complaints against it, arguing that the law violated their right to privacy.

Responding to the thousands of formal complaints, Germany's constitutional court described the law as a "particularly serious infringement of privacy in telecommunications".
