Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has set the bar high for Gotham City villains, but reports in the US say studio bosses have set their sights on Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.

Interesting choice.

I'm trying to imagine Depp in that role and failing...
though that is exactly how I felt about Ledger when I first found out he'd be playing the Joker.

I'd like to see where this goes.
Skadi
I can see Johnny Depp fitting the role... he could certainly easily look the part:

...and its not like he could do worse than Jim Carrey with the role.
Lollipop
Hmm, I thought they weren't going to use the penguin in their movies.
DragonKing9
what about the other classical enemies? penguin, riddler, catwoman, etc..are icons of the bathman history. croc, ivy, and bane are nice but if the movies are set to the original dark story line wouldn't it makesense to follow the classics first?

I read that too... but the basis being that he is a ridiculous character. That part I don't get because the Penguin is pretty much a mobster with a neat collection of Umbrellas.

DK, the Riddler and Penguin were already covered in the article.

Here's a list of potential villains. Who would you like to see?

Sire
I wouldn't mind seeing these:
- Monk ( he's a vampire, duh )
- Harley Quinn + Poison Ivy
- Mad Hatter
- Penguin
- Riddler
- Batzarro
- Robin / New Red Hood

I loved Harvey Dent in Dark Knight, but I don't want to see a Two-Face movie.

I definitely want to see the Riddler.

I concur on the Mad Hatter - I just don't know how they would be able to modernize the part and keep the movie "dark" as his character is such a stretch from reality.

Mr. Freeze would be great because his character is dark enough on its own to set the tone for the movie.

Calendar man
would be wicked too, but only if they make him normal looking - not running around in a costume covered with calanders. lol

Black Mask .. extremely sadistic and a perfect match for this series.
FallingSpider
hehe my husband heard the "omg" factor when I read that, the conversation as follows

"I think I'm actually going to be interested in seeing the next dark night movie, guess who they're looking at for the riddler"

"Johnny depp?"

"yup"

"awesome!"

I'm amused
DragonKing9
sire, i'd liek to see them finish the duality of batman like they have so far
Harley Quinn

The only way I can think of a way to put Harley into the picture would be if they did in fact pair her with Poison Ivy and completely erase her past with the Joker, or simply hint at it, but I doubt there will be any villainesses in the next movie. It's a man's world from what I see. Personally, I'm voting for The Riddler, Killer Croc, or Bane.
VictimofCircumstance
I was thinking Depp would be good for taking over as The Joker, but I can see him as The Riddler.

Black Mask .. extremely sadistic and a perfect match for this series.

I was hoping they'd use him next.
DeathKitten
I would like to see Harley Quinn return and take revenge for her loss of the joker.

I would also like to see Depp playing the Riddler, I think he would pull it off well, he is truely a chameleon. Maybe Harley could team up with him.

Batgirl would make a good accomplice for batman against these two. Bobin gets dull.

Mysterium
I think A Harley appereance would be interstesting. If they can actually pull of a good Riddler and Penguin the same way the transformed the Joker, I'd be all for that. And I have always had a soft spot for Catwomen so I would never say no to that.
Jynx
I would love to see Johnny Depp as the Riddler...then again, I would love to see him in almost anything...or is that nothing?
Sorry...I'm typing things that I should only be thinking again...
Divine Sin
After J.D. pulled off his last couple rolls, I believe he could do anything. I would like to see him as the Riddler.

Did Halle Berry really kill catwoman that badly that no-one is willing to mention the ultimate in seduction?

If you ask most die-hard Batman/Catwoman fans: yes, she did.

Take it as a movie without ties to the rest of the superhero genre: maybe (could go either way, depends on who you ask)

Take it as a Halle Berry movie: No, it was great

I think that speaks volumes for the quality of other Halle Berry movies...

Surely though they can revisit cat woman. Though it's gotta be tough to match the quality of Michelle Pfeiffer in the role. But then again, everyone thought that about the Joker
Jynx
True and true. Besides, we have had to go through how many incarnations of Batman himself?

That's what I was thinking.

If they are going to continue the series like they did from the last movie, It kinda makes me think with the mob being in such a disarray, that it would be the perfect time for the penguin to step in...or even for the mob boss that Harvey flipped in the car to come back as penguin because they never said anything about what happend to him after the crash.

Though if he died, then there is your entrance.

Some of these Batman super villians sound ridiculous...

"Kite Man - Charles "Chuck" Brown commits crimes by arming himself with kite weapons and hang-gliding on a big kite."

"Magpie - Margaret Pye is a jewel thief who targets only jewels named after birds, and then replaces the jewels with booby-trapped replicas. She is named for the Magpie, who in folklore is attracted to bright shiny things. She is killed by the second Tally Man."

"General - Ulysses Hadrian Armstrong, a psychotic child with the mind of a military genius dresses himself and his henchmen in historical attire as they act out crimes based on military history."

This one had me spill my cereal all over my laptop in fits of laughter...

Calculator - Noah Kuttler is a highly intelligent criminal who fights Batman and the Justice League wearing a costume designed like a pocket calculator. The costume has a large numerical keypad on the front and a flashlight-like device on the headpiece, which can make "hard light" constructs. The device analyzes the powers or tactics of the hero defeating him, and inoculates him from ever being defeated by that hero ever again.

Frightens me to think of who would even want to play these villians...
Vampire_Gamer
I think Depp will do a good job but I don't really want to see the Riddler. I loved it when Jim Carry did it but I want to see them use some of the guys that have only been in cartoons and comics.

Bane, Killer Croc, Hugo Strange, Clayface, Ventriloquist and Mr.Scarface, Blackmask.

If you pay attention you can spot a Ragdoll cameo in Dark Knight. He would be great if they also used Catwomen.
Sanctu Nosferatu

Depp will own that shit. And Sire, don't worry about a Two-Face movie. They killed him off in Dark Knight. (yes, he's dead)
Siren
I think Depp could pull it off :P
And I'd love to see Harley, Cat woman, Ivy, and Black Mask!
I really hope they don't screw up casting!
I didn't even bother to see Halley...

Eh....skipped right over my post didn't you. Out of all the villians, it is catwomen I would like to see most.
Dante
I'd like to see Catwoman, but the bad-ass from Batman: Year One that takes on the mob.

And I think Angelina Jolie could be kick-ass for the role.
darkality24
Am I the only one who wants to see deadshot make an appearance? he would be a terrible main villian. but he's the only bad guy who's as disciplined as batman himself, and he's a gun for hire, so writting him into the story would be a snap.

darkangel16
He would probably make a great Riddler.
DragonKing9
halle berry killed catwoman. the movie wasn't tht great as a stand alone either. not sure if jolie would be a gritty enough catwoman. would be nice to have a more serious lvoe interest for bats though
Ooze
Hm, even before I saw that article, I was guessing that the next villains would be Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman.
Pure and simple because these would be the most realistic villains of the bunch, seeing how they're trying to keep the movies 'realistic' in a way (yea..the scarecrow's gas was a stretch..but still..plausible).

Depp as the riddler would be interesting.. although I don't see him as a villain, which the Riddler in all is.
Jolie as catwoman, I understand she's casted for looks, but please, get an actress.
Hoffman as Penguin, erm..isn't he a bit too..like..TALL.. for that?

Too bad Ledger died...would've loved to have seen more of him as the Joker.
DragonKing9
i don't really wnat to see the new oddbals like freeze or harley until the classic characters are finished first
Archangel
Aside from the Riddler and Penguin, the only Batman villains I'd like to see are Man-Bat, Poison Ivy, Catwoman and maybe Mr Freeze. Bane would be good, but I have a hard time divorcing him from an eventual Batman defeat and the rise of Azrael.

I *am* wondering, if instead of a villain, perhaps another superhero making a cameo. A young Oliver Queen, for instance, would make a great rival/foil/partner for Bruce Wayne. (Too bad Smallville stole the character already).

would batman really be the one to have a crossover with? supes would be a natural choice since they butt heads so much. but if you were to introduce a new hero why not robin? :P <hides>
Episkopos
Funnily enough, David Tennant of Doctor Who fame said he might be interested in playing the Riddler.

Like Ooze said up there, the thing with the new Bat-Films is that they're much more... realistic. On the outer edges of credibility, definitely, but nothing really left-field. Ra's Al Ghul (and no, I can't remember how that's punctuated) isn't immortal, he just makes everyone think he is. That probably rules out Man-Bat, Clayface and Mr. Freeze; they demand a more science fiction style than I think Christopher Nolan's going for.

There was some talk of making the Penguin an eccentric British arms dealer (he'd have to be British with a name like Oswald Cobblepot), which I'd love to see (maybe as an adversary for Bruce Wayne rather than Batman - he's snooping around Wayne Enterprises, getting all industrial-espionagy on their arses, and not afraid to kill if it means he gets their business).

Poison Ivy would work exceptionally well as some sort of assassin with a botanical fetish (rather than She Of The Magic Immune System like she is in the comics).

Catwoman could work as either the logical extension of all the Batman copyists we've seen in The Dark Knight (remember how Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman was a semi-vigilante with a much more criminal tendency?) or as her original jewel-thieving self.

Is it wrong that I see the Riddler as a copycat Joker? Much more of a planner, much more of a conventional criminal, trying to behave the same way, but with a sense of fair play, or maybe a desire to show off, that means he sets himself up to fail. The Riddler's always seemed like a bit of a dud to me. You have a villain who can't resist leaving a trail of clues paired off against the World's Greatest Detective...

What I'd like to see from the next film, story-wise, is the Riddler showing up and turning his formidable mind on the problem of Working Out Who Batman Is. We've got that lawyer chap from The Dark Knight who knows the Truth, so it's not like there isn't a place for him to start. Maybe that and the Penguin as an adversary for Bruce Wayne (and we've got Bill Earl wandering round with a grudge against his old boss as well...)

I agree a lot with what you are saying and it's one reason I love the new Batmans. Its the realm where it could actually happen. I think Catowmen as the the jewel theif would be a great idea actually as long as they could pull of the right actress and sexual tension between her and Bruce.

And the Pengiun arms dealer sounds good. Could always add a little something in there to make him twisted somehow. The Riddler is stilly iffy. I too think him still to close to the Joker and would like to see something different in the next one but if they could pull it off some how without The Riddler going over the top then by all means I'd go along for the ride.
DragonKing9
main difference between riddler and the joker is you have no clue what the joker would do. he could just as easily kill you or give you $100. there is no rhyme or reason to him. the riddler wants everyone to know he did it and goes about bragging of it. joker doesn't brag.
SweetNightmares
After the movie my husband and I were talking about the next villians and I said they would probably do the Riddler and the Penguin (before I knew about this article) I wonder if they'll do Poison Ivy, or Mr. Freeze again...
Jiub
I really don't want to see penguin again.. I'm sorry but that was ridiculous. He is a classic villain, but there is just something about him I just don't like. Croc would be awesome in the next, but alas with the more "realistic" point of view I think that will be impossible. Same goes for Man-Bat. He would be sweet to see as well. As long as they don't pull a Spiderman 3 and throw in as many as you can, and then turn batman emo.. That would not be funny at all. So far I've watched the Dark Knight 3 times.. I just can't get enough of the Joker.. It was done sooo well. I think Johnny Depp would make a good Riddler, I'm sure he could play the part well. Not Heath Ledger to Joker well... But well.
SweetNightmares
I could see Johnny Depp as the Riddler, but hopefully they will just keep with what they are doing. A lot of movies make the mistake of changing things up too much and then the watchers are turned away from it. Once the Dark Knight comes out I could watch that every day because Heath Ledger was so damn amazing in it. No one will ever play the Joker as well as he did. What a tragic loss to the film industry, why couldn't Paris Hilton die instead?
Jiub
Oh I'm sure Paris will get her's... I hope. In a way that is most painful as well. Some outlandish STD that rots the skin or something.. Burns it off. Her last words will be "That's hot!" only in reference to her own burning skin. T'wod be ironic.
SweetNightmares
lol I would pay to see that.
damienreborn
a villian i havnt seen anyone mention and that i think would fit in very well with the style of movie the director is goin for would be the mad hatter
DragonKing9
he ws mentioned under the dark knight thread
joexx000
cant wait to see Depp as Riddler
SweetNightmares
I think he could pull it off rather well.
