The Rt Rev Catherine Roskam, Suffragan Bishop of New York, said domestic violence is deemed acceptable in some parts of the world and that "even the most devout Christians" are guilty of it.

She said some of the 670 Anglican bishops gathered in Canterbury for the once-a-decade Lambeth Conference probably beat their wives, and added that it is difficult to discuss it with them because they do not believe it is wrong.

Her comments have been condemned as outrageous and untrue, and a further example of the condescending attitude of western Anglicans to those in developing countries.

Surprise, surprise. I know of women who went to their clergy about being abused by their husbands. They were told that they must try harder to be good wives. That they must not be doing something right or they wouldn't be beaten.
*shakes head in disgust*

i liked this line....

"In the wider community these things still exist but we don't do that as bishops or pastors. "

so they only beat the wives when not in their priestly robes?

... That means their societies view it as a norm and see nothing wrong with it, but the bishops and pastors see it differently.

The saddest thing is that the Anglican Church is actually a relatively civilised form of Christianity...
Skadi
Her rambling sounded like paranoid feminism - and not like it was based on any hard facts. So your judgments are fairly ridiculous considering what they are based on.

Judegments? I don't seem to remember casting any judgements?

As it happens though, I am all for more rights for women...

Skadi
How about the right to remain innocent until proven guilty?

Everyone in this thread have made negative comments about the church based on this woman going off about non-western church leaders. Nothing like swallowing whole a baseless accusation based on opinion and generalities. Wonderful.

The only thing they are guilty of as far as I'm concerned is believing in fairy stories.

It was said by Jesus of Nazareth that Christians must expect to be mocked becuase their belief would seem absurd to other people. That is true of the most devout Christians, and certainly true of a bunch of atheistic frauds running a religious racket like the Anglican Church. The current Archbishop of Canterbury is certainly as good an atheist as I am, and yet still reaping the lucre of the faithful of moral majority's religion.

For what it's worth, my reasons for thinking negatively about the Anglicans have nothing to do with this thread, or with their treatment of women, real or alleged.
Skadi
Fair enough.

Looking back across history, is there such a thing as a civilized form of Christianity?

So this where we all jump in with the stereotypes, right?
WilV
I thought that's what this thread was about?
Jynx
Okay...you got me there.
prometheus
As far as scapegoating and stereotyping are concerned, morally speaking the Christian Church's coat is on a very shaky nail...

So any stereotyping done on this thread would come under the heading of poetic justice...
Jynx
Maybe...

This could all just digress into those that need to bash Chrisitans around taking their turn...

Which reminds me of a bumpersticker that I got for one of my brothers a while back, it said:

"Christians, can't live with them. Can't feed them to the lions anymore"

Sad, but true.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot.

Don't really need any more to cheer for the "atheist" team

Actually mine came not only from the article, but from personal experiences. I didn't "swallow" anything.
DragonKing9
people are never innocent till proven guilty. that is the greatest con job you can fall for. you're guilty till proved innocent and even then you're still guilty of something. if you truly believe that i actually pity you and thats not something i do easily

All of these people were zealots of one kind or another... When you genuinely don't believe in anything, it's hard to work yourself into a fanatical frenzy over your beliefs...

The SS was NOT occultist. If anything, they professed Christianity (don't give me this "real Christian/fake Christian" bullshit either; Christian is Christian for these purposes). HITLER did what he did in the name of Christianity, and the Pope of the time quietly supported him.

You're kidding right? Or do you really not know history at all?
Skadi
lol @SS not being Occultist.
Alaras
They actually professed Christianity, and were ANTI-occult, if anything. They often confiscated occult symbols and persecuted practitioners. Don't you know YOUR history?
Skadi
... lol You are cute. Here we go.. a little history lesson.

The SS was created by Himmler based on the Teutonic knights. Himmler had a Castle in Westphalia reconstructed, inclusing a huge table with seating for his twelve seniors around the round table. Just like King Arthur and his knights. This castle was essentially a new "Camelot", and the SS were the counterpart to the Templar Knights.

Himmler himself believed in spiritualism and astrology among other things. He was convinced that he was the reincarnation of King Heinrich the Fowler. Himmler even created new festivals to take the place of Christian events. The SS even banned the words Christian and Christmas from appearing in their documents. He had a "throne" carved for himself from wood which was engraved with runes.

A speech Himmler made to the SS reveals his attitude towards Christianity:

"This Christendom, this greatest pestilence which could have befallen us in history, which has weakened us for every conflict, we must finish with."

Heck, even their symbol is two runes! How much more clear could it be that they were occultist and ANTI-Christian?
prometheus
The lady has a point.

What really strikes me is that it is a very prominent feature of Western 'civilised' societies to shove their 'civilisation' down others throats! That is also included in their religious practices.
