In my belief, it's just a fictional television show loosely based upon standard vampire myths and including basic demonology to boot. In my belief it's nothing more than an entertaining telelvision show. No fact to it.

In my opinion "Buffy the vampire slayer" show is just another soap opera that makes a whole new mythology for those who beleive it, just as Dan Brown's "Da Vinci code" beleive it and you will createa whole new world of information that does not exist in our current, real world.

It's entertainment....Television you know.
I do see a few political statements in the show however...so take that as you will.

I agree with evil fish, but also they seem to want to put more and more mythology into these shows and make it seem all too real when really,I mean come on...do you see vampires going around and cracking someones neck with one hand? We're not that strong dare say...please don't condescend what I just said, just my opinon on something...

The creator of the show, a ong with the in house writing staff, (if you watch any of the behind the scene stuff) actually say that they didn't do too much research on Demonolgy etc... in fact at some points they were even taking family pets names and writing them backwards to get some demon names. (Mind you they might have not being telling the truth... it's just what they said)
I do believe that that is often truth in fiction but in order to really go into the buffy show I think we'd need to site examples and dig into serveral episodes and use those as a starting point.
Anyone have an episode in mind dealing with a Vampire or demon issue where we could start from?
or
dissect a book we all all familiar with in order to conduct an indepth study and begin ot start seperating the facts from the fiction.
Seems since the title of the thread title is about Buffy... perhaps that's a common show we all have and would be a good place to start?

well Buffy is the biggest show of that subject matter. Something like the X-Files throws out some serious supernatural overtones at times, but it's no guarantee or anything.

Good show - no factual content. I think that about sums it up. Let's face it, all vampire-based media these days has strayed a loooooong way from the original legends, have you seen or read about an ugly vampire in anything made / written in the last 15 years? I think not. But should anyone actually bother to look through the mythology of the vampire they will find that they were supposedly hideous, repellent creatures with no redeeming features to them whatsoever. Joss Wheedon, A*** R*** et al have turned the whole thing around to make vampires out to be beautiful, misunderstood, delicate creatures of soulful darkness blah blah fuckin' blah.
P.S. - Gotta agree with Mr Creature about the kid, sorry vampire, who has lived for a hundred years and somehow managed to avoid daylight throughout that time.

Joss Whedon based many of his ideas on various sources ranging from historical writings to popular media. For example, the demons as original rulers of the planet was based on old writings about what we now know as dinosaurs. Demons as various species and organized into subcultures, that was his own idea.
There is some truth in everything, you just have to look beyond the popular consensus.

"based" is a loose enough term.

Was influenced by/inspired by/got the idea from/stole the idea from. Whatever phrase/word/epithet you use, it's still fact. (As far as I know. I remember reading it in The Watcher's Guide, Vol. 2.)

No, but what I mean is they based everything very very loosely.

That's true. He had to, to appeal to wide audience. If he were specific, drawing on one legend and following it to a tee, it would be considered copyright infringement, no production company would buy, he would get no distribution, and he would end being poor and half-crazy living in box on some sad sidestreet, slum (worst-case scenario, of course).

Well I was more thinking it allowed him more creative freedom, and he avoided the star trek route, where insanely obsessed people bombard him with complaints over the inconsistencies in his use of mythology. The writing's like the show itself, it's light and loose, not intricately woven, heavy material.

Fiction is incredible for stimulating the mind and opening up new trails of thought processes. We should really try to look to these sources not as as fact but as potential fact, and use these explorative thoughts. We can research them further in some cases, and where we can't we should consider them. Ponder them.
You know how they say it's all about the journey, not the destination ? That's about how I feel when it comes to learning, and discussing, and theorizing about issues like vampire fact and fiction. The eventual discovery may be disappointing, like the end of a video game after you've beaten it. You devoted so much time and enjoyment to it for awhile, but then once that final destination is reached, the enjoyment has ceased. My point anyway, is not to let naysayers annoy you too much when they dismiss everything. Don't let them discourage you from that pursuit of knowledge and truth.
The fun is in asking the questions. All of them. What if ? Could this be true ? If not, what if I modify it a little with something that makes more sense to me ? Now, what about if it were this new way ? Look to discussing alternatives and possibilities with people who are fascinating because they have open minds and are not so quick to dismiss you each time. I do this routinely with topics whether I believe in them or not because I enjoy it so much.
So, please keep this in mind as you browse the forum topics.
