darkness knight
a thundering wurm really isnt a dragon
Rhuen
more so than the caterpiller looking "wurms" from that game.

"wurm" is taken from "wyrm" which refers to the legless Dragons of Germanic mythology.

and to some they would look at that creature and think "Dragon"

Semantics isn't the issue here, the issue is "what makes a dragon a dragon?"

I thought of a dragon looking at that image, likely hood so did someone else.

Asianic Dragons are incredibly fascinating. It has been hypothesized that "they fly by a specific mode of balancing between the earth's magnetic field and the prevailing winds" (Page, Ingpen 188). I'm not sure if you've caught the "Dragons" (http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/dragons/dragons.html) miniseries on Animal Planet, but there is an interesting representation of the asianic dragon. If you go here: http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/dragons/index.html you will find sneak peek trailers.

You should check that out, Rhuen.
Rhuen
I recorded the program and watched it. Pretty good, but I though their asian dragon looked like it was more based on Leviathin than on the Asian dragons.
Antares
I missed, we don't get Animal Planet. I will have to catch it on DVD.
Vaati
... reminds me of my cusions lol not except the battle drag

Rather than going all out to post the images from this place "like I have been" I'll just post a link to it

Nice link, Rhuen. Good find!
Rhuen
I was going to post all the pictures from it over time, but I thought "That's too much work and a waste of server space"
So Link it is.

You're so smart.

Wise and draconian...some might say...

Somebodys trying real hard to hit that 5000 mark.lol

I think dragons are a way of man trying to create a ultimate form supernatural creature. They come in all forms and cover almost every aspect of things natura, from lightning and thunder to water and earth.
I have a large tattoo of an asian dragon on my right arm. Thats my strong arm and the dragon on it represents the power and speed I have achieved studying martial arts all my life.
Scared Atrocity
Worship the cuteness! This one beats all the other dragons.

the image on that post looks like the entrance of the dueling dragons ride in islands of adventure

i think that the one thing that MOST sources will agree on is that a dragon is a fire-spitting reptile
Antares
That's the archetype, yeah.
Rhuen
Not really, in fact the majority of dragons in ancient writings spit poison or water not fire and are mostly associated with bodies of water.
Antares
Let me rephrase that, then:

That's the cultural archetype of today.
Rhuen
yep. That is how it appears today.
Antares
The poison and water dragons interest me. Anything off the the beaten path is fascinating. Which is why I like Asianic Dragons; there is comparatively less studies and references in popular culture to them than the European Dragon.
Rhuen
European monsters tend to be what are mostly seen in entertainment. Even in Asian anime and such many European monsters are seen with the more popular of their own culture making apperances too.

I think its the way the European dragon is depicted that appealed to so many as an evil monster.
Antares
I like asian dragons because they are beneficial (usually) to humanity.
Gothic Dragon
the ones in reign of fire were kinda funny but good looking at the same time
Rhuen
Reign of Fire
Antares
Those dragons were very "scientific." "Two glands in the mouth combine to create..."
"Natural napalm."
Rhuen
Bombadier Beetle Hypothesis for fire breath, based on the actual beetle that has two blands in the abdomen that produce an incendiary blast at predaters.

the other hypothesis is the Platiunum on the teeth, Hydrogen producing bacteria one.

Water dragon.
Gothic Dragon
wut i meant when i talked about reign of fire is that they werent exactly conventional(to me anyway) but they still looked good
Rhuen
I thought they looked pretty common looking only with more spines, a Dragon Heart rip off head, and an odd wing design.
"yeah different yet still with the classical dragon undertone"

a very fitting example for this thread about comparing the image of dragons.
Antares

A Hydra. I'd consider it a dragon.
Rhuen
nice pic, I put a few in the earlier posts.
Antares
Yeah, I wasn't sure. 20 pages is a lot to search through.
Rhuen
yeah, its okay, no problem with posts of same types.

With mostly pics you can really just skim through them. biggrin.gif
