do you think it exists or did exist? where is it, where did it go?
what are your beliefs on it?

Not quite sure. I'm fairly sure there is some truth behind it, some basis for it. But how much it is hard for me to say and I wouldn't be prepared to do so. I just find it interesting.

The sea is vast and mysterious. A lot of associations with it rooted to very ancient times. From a knowledge of things about the oceans, properties, cycles of the earth, various occurances, and other things there is a good possibiitiy of many cities which were taken underwater over the period of thousands of years. For me I often have a feeling that the oceans hide a lot of things which sometimes and find myself thinking this a lot when by the sea...

Being largely fascinated with piracy and its history (I also just love water and the oceans in general), I can tell you of one simular occurance in relatively recent times: Port Royal. It was once a huge center of commerce and trade - frequented by pirates which gave it the title "the wickedest city in the world" among some. It was suddenly largely destroyed (never did recover) by an earthquake (killing thousands and submerging entire areas underwater). Though this occured in 1692 and is obviously not the Atlantis spoken of - it clearly shows that the sort of thing happens and how suddenly it can occur in coastal areas and islands - even continents. Here is info on that: http://nautarch.tamu.edu/portroyal/

There was another thread on this (atlantis) about a month back also if you look you might find it interesting.

i believe the atlantis existed
the scientific theory of the plate tectonic explains what happened to it
it was an huge island in the middle of the atlantic ocean that was sucked by the earth in the convection zone
the mayan culture were like their cousins and their culture was similar
the viking had stories about them
Liod

i heardan interesting theory that it was located in the medeteranian and that it sank and cypres is the top of the island, all thats left. and that the remaining atlantians who escaped went to egypt and mesopotania and founded the great civilisations
mess|ah
Someone recently claimed that they found it's possible location.

It's possible to exist, i've been in a place once that had trees dated from the egyptian time, and had lots and lots of legends who were half true half myths, and some of the things from the legends were still standing there.

Last time I heard of Atlantis, it was from the Greek studies class. Apparently, my professor believed that the Minoan ruin was a reminent of Atlantis culture.
He believed that Plato mixed up dates and location and thus, Atlantis was Minoan culture in the Aegean that got perished by natural catastrophy.

But they are all bunches of theories, y'know.

It may have existed but storys get changed over the ages. How do we know it was not just a small town that found it's way into modern myths?. For all we know it may still stand. A change of name is all it takes for it to be forgotten.
