I know theirs probably not alot of Glbtq members on here but was wondering all the same if anyone has gotten a chance to catch the film Soldiers girl. I bought it a couple of months ago on dvd and cant watch it anymore (even though it is one of my favorite films thats not a horror or comedy) because I always cry too much in the end.
If you havent Ill let you kow a bit about it:
it's a film done by showtime based on the actuall events of what happened to PFC Barry Winchell of the 502 Screaming Eagles back in 1998. he was stationed at the base (which is in the Ken-ten border In kentucky) and fell in love with a transgendered Performr at a local nashviolle gay club named Calpernia Addams. This movie takes place after the dont ask dont tell policy was put into effect and goes into some of the small details of tht policy but not much as Barries commanding officers went against most of it's policies including Hazing Barry during drill sessions, Starting up a seriously illegal interogation into who went to this club with barry and ending in causing one fo the newer memebrs to the division going berserk and killing Barry while he slept with a louisville slugger after the two of them got into an altercation earlier in the day. It is very well done for a indy film and very touching. I cry every time I watch it cuz it is so sad in the end. But they also used alot of reference points of characters and scenery of events directly from the lovely miss addams (who went under gender reassignment and now lives in California)
Its a good film to watch even if your not gay or questioning and is best classified as a tragedy.
Plus the special features are really cool including the footage of how they got the actor playing calpernia ready each day (cal is a transexual not a transvestite so they had to amke prostethic boobs and hips that they glued on the actor. very cool.)
