hey,
you lot like the music because it is dark, and such,
how can you not appreciate the voice of the singer,
i for one happen to think that Avril Lavigne has a most excellent voice, it is very soothing for me,
and you can say what you want about her i cannot stop you, but she has a very lovely voice,
now i suggest you all go and pay attention to the voice of the singers, or in most gothic cases (shouters)
and then decide whether they have talent for singing

I suggest you check out Deine Lakaien then...Alexander Veljanovs voice is amazing...so deep, dark and sensual. While their music may be a bit odd at times (folk music...hmpf. bite meh :P), his voice more than makes up for it.

Who says I don't appreciate "the voice of the singer?!"
You can't tell me that I listen to "goth" music because its cool or whatever..
You have no idea why I listen to what I listen to

Actually no, for the most part I don't listen to gothic music.
I listen to metal.
As for your other assumption. I AM a vocalist, of course I pay attention to other vocalists.

The tears for fears version is clearly better tho......
and in reply to the topic, I atchally listen to alot of different styles and alot of them arnt sad, the cure for instance are often uber happy! not to mention EBM like apoptgyma berkzerk I also listen to a hell of alot of glitch electronica and thats mostly ambient or pretty cherpy....so in conclusion
YOUR FUCKING WRONG

the tears for fears version is a little too up beat and happy for such sad lyrics i think that gary jules has a way better voice and with the slower sadder music behind it, it helps make the song 10 times better.

I couldnt disagree more i fits with ToF's style its synthpop, not to mention the style of the era ...gary jules to me has a voice that isnt unlike anyone else's , now if you took someone like maynard.....it would a different story even the lead singer of Opeth sung it, gary jules is no one!
and wasnt this thread about prooving that goths arnt just into depressing music.....you seem to be up holding that fact! DUH!
looks like I'm the only cherpy person on here....cept maybe clearwitch

Just because a song is depressing doesnt make it gothic... in fact i am actually the complete opposite of a goth i just really like vampires. I think that the gary jules version of that song is depressing, yes, but it is anything but gothic...it is just a very sad song. And gary jules might be a no one but i still feel that he sang it way better than ToF.

Come back and give us a reason that You know we listen to dark, depressing music. And as for vocals in the stuff I listen to, I don't have time to list my favorite vocalists. So, be nice, and don't presume that in your Four days on this forum, you know each and everyone of us .
Thank you, and have a nice day. :morte:

heehee you seem to have scared him off.
In reply to the original poster: You seem to have more qualities to being a typical goth than you think hun, or at least some one trying to fit the definition of a goth. Think about it you are being prejudice and discriminating against others because of a couple of topics that you may or may not have read. If you think about it enough you will come to realise that you are a hypocrite.
Am i a typical goth - I listen to punk, gothic melodic, gothic, female vocalists (eg, Sheryl Crow) , Hair Metal, 80's metal, rock, soft rock, industrial, new punk. I also like classical a bit and the odd pop song.
I generally like or at least i can see talent in bands or solo-ists that play their own instruments.
The vocolist is not everything. The rest of the music and instruments also play an important part in the making of a good piece of music.
Before you come on here and start accusing people of such things, make sure you are not so ignorant about what they are actually like.

I listen to a very big variety of music. And yea my favorite happens to be the "shouting" kind, but I LIKE that sound. I appreciate most singers that have the voice. And yes I do think Avril has a good range, I just don't like the sound. I love singers like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and yes even Christina Agularia and although I don't like her kind of music. I do love her voice. That was an overly stereotypical comment...you should ASK if we listen instead of assuming.

i know exactly what mean there Bahamut.
I myself pay attention to the music, the lyrics and the musical talent of the singer. actually i pay more attention to the singer's talent and lyrics than a lot of people may do, but im certainly not ruling out that no one else does.

A common misconception.
Shouting is common in metal. Gothic music isn't necessarily metal. There alot "gothic" bands/musicians who do not yell and scream.
Have you listened to any Dead Can Dance? It's ambient, middle-eastern sounding music accompanied by talented and haunting singing.
Anyway, I actually take time to appreciate good voices and such. I admit that singers like Christina Aguilera CAN sing, but their image is too phony.
Some good singers I like:
Bjork
Tori Amos
Aretha Franklin
edit-By the way, what would you call goth?

Or for that matter, Cocteau Twins.
In fact, one of my favorite tracks is a Cocteau Twins/Dead Can Dance tune called Alice....

I find that alot of goth music has spoken based vocals...most trad goth does!
sisters of mercy, bauhaus...etc not to mention industrial bands like skinny puppeh its offspring! alot of ebm is like that often to.....
I dont know what point I'm making lol I'll just go back to my pint then?

you are saying to listen to the voice of the singer before judging? Well listen to the voice of the forum before you go deciding what it likes and doesnt.
I love avril's voice. i think her music is shit but i love her voice. i dont like her type of music. my opinion. same with mariah carey. i love her voice. hell i own damn near every cd she came out with. i also like celine dion (( everyone shut the fuck up on that lol)) and diane warkwick or whatever her name is. I listen to alot of genres of music and i dont listen to a song if the singers voice sucks. because then it isnt music...its noise. yeah, alot of people here like screamer music but oh well. that is there thing. bands like slipknot and mudvayne dont JUST yell, they sing it sometimes too. and they do it damn good.
