I mean well-known bands which you don't necessarily like or listen to, but accept that they are pioneers and respect them for the contribution they have made.
I just thought it would be interesting if people shared my opinion.
I would quote such bands as
Metallica (although they sold out, the bastards)
Black Sabbath
Queen
Nirvana (up for debate)
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Sex Pistols
Hell, I'd even put Madonna in here, she's damn good at what she does. Britney and Christina would be nowhere without her...

Im going to have to say Tool. Anyone whos opinion is worth anything knows that Tool are something unique, wheather they like 'em or not.
The Beatles. Where the fuck would music now be without them ?
Steve Vai. Anyone with a small idea as to musically related things, knows that Steve Vai is some 'insane guitar playing guy'.

Britney, yes... Christina .. less so. But this isn't about them!
Thank you for the input, Cold Blue Steel. I'm not sure Tool fit my somewhat strict criteria because they aren't well-known enough...yet. But Steve Vai. Oh yes.
The Beatles, yes, The Stones, yes, although I find people tend to decamp to either the Beatles side or the Stones side which I think is daft because their music is different yet still Pioneering.

The Pixies - Without them there would have been no Nirvana etc.
Jimi Hendrix - The original guitar showman God.
Robert Johnson - Without him no Rock and Roll.
Guns n Roses - Probably the best and brightest of stadium rock in their pomp.

Lynard Skynard.... probably the most successful southren rock band ever.
Willie Nelsen. Hey, you didnt specify.

What about Santana, Aerosmith, and BB King? up for debate?

The Misfits 78-83
Glenn Danzig (vocalist for misfits in that time)
Mike Patton (i named just him because of his tons of projects, but a big influencing one, Faith No More)
Quorthon (the mastermind behind Bathory, one of the pioneering bands of True Kvlt Black Metal. died monday, june 7th of heart failure at 39.)
take note these artists may not be as well known in other music communties but for the most part people would have some clue.

I disagree with Metallica...they got spit on by there own fans....
Johnny Cash...why is he so famous? he wasn't all that talented and his voice was annoying..and he ruined any respect that people might of had with that shitty cover of NIN's Hurt.
No one except for the MTV crowd respects Aerosmith...the rest of us can see how washed up they are.
Cannibal Corpse? What the hell? hardly anyone has heard of them and they are just like every other death metal band...they may have been the first but theyt are just like the rest now.
Pink Floyd? Anyone can do acid and make songs out of sound effects....look at rap...they don't even do the acid...
Lynard Skynard......they're songs are so just blah...not exciting...same kinds of white trash redneck lyrics over some guitar riffs that most beginners can play.
I will talk about more bands later...I disagree with more of them...

They haven't made their music that different from any other nu-metal band. They haven't brought anything new to the genre. They're just another nu-metal band.

I have to disagree with you in many things...
Metallica had it's time... just as many other great bands before getting into decadence... because now they are being despised, it doesn't mean that they shouldn't be recognized for what they did...
Cannibal Corpse is a lot more known than that... many people tends to impose their own vision about certain matters, regardless the truth about them... I hope it's not your case... Even though I also disagree with their universality, no matter how good they might be in what they do, they do not escape from the black metal circles (or whatever is their style called)... this is the same reason why I disagree with Tool as an universal band as well (even when I'm a huge fan of them and they are simply amazing)...
But Pink Floyd????... erhmmmm... you know... in that case, anyone can use a deep voice to sing, hit his hitar randomly and do some really stupid dance steps, but they won't become Elvis Presley... besides, the simplicity of the riffs used by a band has nothing to do with the fact thay they are good, or bad... just look at U2... I personally think that they are a great band as they have reinvented themselves succesfully more than once, and they have some really good songs, yet their riffs are usually very simple...

The Stones, definitely. Beatles too.
Mental Roadkill, I believe you mentioned the Cure...and I'm curious as to why. If it's why I think, then why not Depeche Mode?
Jimi Hendrix...BB King....and to think BB King never played a chord. Just picks with his fingers.
Not so sure about Aerosmith, they're pretty much just the US's answer to the Stones.
While Nirvana & Pearl Jam did a grand job at changing the face of music in the nineties, I'm not so sure that it's a universal respect.
No one has mentioned Pavorati (sp?), so I thought I'd throw him in.
U2 was mentioned, and I definitely agree with this choice.
As for Cannibal Corpse....They'll be forgotten in ten years. Guaranteed. I personally can't wait for it.

Heh, nah it's not the erm.. gothic culture thingy, and besides that, Depeche Mode have only recently begun to be widely recognised as figureheads in goth music's uprising.
The reason I chose the Cure is because their music has been a huge influence on a great deal of the bands in existence today, and not only rock bands. Of course, the Cure are important in the development of modern rock music, but they are also important influences on the development of some of todays pop genres (I mean, their radio songs were bordering on bubblegum sometimes). And just the fact that they were a popular band in the 80s is enough to say they were important in todays music's development anyway.. because todays artists grew up listening to them... or be it now we may be a generation ahead.. todays artists grew up listening to people who grew up listening to them.
(This theory could link Elvis as an important influence on Nine Inch Nails.. which he is.. which I'm willing to debate also)
And just look at this diverse list of artists who have recently covered or worked with The Cure:
AFI, Blink 182, Jack Off Jill, Jupiter Blue, Junior Jack
Theres 5 contrasting musical styles that have actually payed homage to The Cure... so yep, there's my view :D

You've gotta be shitting me.
Problem 1: Never involved in any media? Open up a magazine sometime. For that matter, turn on the TV sometime. They're involved in so much media it's disgusting, and I usually don't have a problem with that. The only problem I have with it, ACTUALLY, in this case, is that they and their fans both claim they do NOT, which is a lie. Hello?! ARE YOU BLIND?
Problem 2: Incredibly talented musicians? I tell you the truth, I've never heard that statement and NOFX used in the same breath. They're not that good. All THEY do is make a song about the same anti-government, anti-president statements everyone is talking about. It's unoriginal. It's RIDICULOUS. It's lost its fun, and it's old already.
For another thing, I'm getting sick of 12 year olds running around saying they're TOUGHANDHARDCORE because they listen to NOFX and have NOFX patches all over their backpacks. Who hasn't heard NOFX? Maybe my grandmother? Possibly. But that's because she's old and she doesn't leave the house. If she left the house, she'd know all about them. It's the sad truth. So everyone that thinks NOFX is a universally respected band, and actually worth recognition 10 years from now, or hell, worth recognition the moment I type this, get out of your shell, because my own little corner of the universe could give a FUCK about them and their lame music.
