I don't know about you guys, but most of my favorite movies are independent movies that hardly anyone has heard of. I love films like Session 9 (possibly the best horror movie in the sense of psychological horror...Stephen Gevedon and Brad Anderson did such a good job writing it), Velvet Goldmine, My First Mister... you know... the movies that weren't very big hits in theatres. I'm still trying to find Gypsy 83 (which stars - my obsession

- Kett Turton, and the lovely Sarah Rue), but none of the video stores around here carry it! Grrr... anyway, tell me some of your favorite indie films. Perhaps if we get the word out about them, more people will watch them. I'm always trying somehow to "promote" my favorite indie films.

Well, I really liked Memento as a thriller/suspence/mystery indie film, since I think of indie films more of new ideas instead of no money. For comedy, I really liked Fear and Loathing, which can be a sort of indie film since I've never heard of it being released in theatres, but it's such a great movie.

I'd forgotten about Pi. I think all Maths students should be made to watch it, it brings real meaning to the subject. I was crap at Maths but I loved that film.

Memento was pretty good.
Bowling for Columbine was fascinating, although you do need the customary pinch of salt with any Michael Moore project.
Best independent film ever though - Donnie Darko.

Donnie Darko is a masterpiece. The website is damned hard. I can get to level 3, no-one seems to know if there's anything beyond level 3...

I think I read something about that website, can't remember what it was exactly but it was pretty complimentary. You have a link at all NV so's I could have a gander?
If you have then we'll overlook the blatant plagarism of my siggy!!!

Not an independent film.
Was made by 20th Century Fox, and released in theatres...that's pretty mainstream if you ask me.

It was an independent film. Richard Kelly, the director, took his script to the Cannes festival and gave it to pretty much everyone he could find. The only backer he could find was Drew Barrymore. It was only through her putting her own money into it that Donnie Darko ever got made.

The fact that it was released in theatres automatically diqualifies it from being an independent film.

May 15 2004, 01:30 PM
In which case then surely no movie that is seen by more than a dozen or so people could be classed as independent.

I'm talking about a MAJOR theatre release.
Not just something that's shown at the 1-screen hippy theatre on the corner.

I dunno about the States, but Donnie Darko was released twice here in the UK. The first time, very few people saw it and it did have a very limited release. Once people started hearing how good it was they re-released it in virtually all theatres (possibly done by a larger distributor). So technically it was an independent movie to begin with, but Fox may well have acquired the release rights to it later on.

There is some debate as to whether that is the end of the 'game' but I feel it is a rather abrupt way to end things. Occasionally people say they have found further levels but they are usually ignored. Yeah I got so fed up I did a messageboard search on it: not to cheat though! But general consensus is that it is the end..."Time's up Donnie".

Funny since it is in the indie section at my work. A lot of popular movies are there since there are many many popular independent films. Watching indie films doesn't make you all special and deviant. And like I said, there are load of popular indie films, look at My Big Fat Greek Wedding. That movie was insanely huge and its an independent film. And Juno was also huge and thats independent. To me it sounds like you think it makes you cooler for watching independent films or that they are somehow better which is bull.
As for me Boondock Saints is the greatest movie of all time.

Thats the biggest load of bullshit ever. An indie film is a film that wasn't funded by a major film company, a movie not run by one of those huge companies. Thats it. They are still in theaters. They usually have short time showings or they have it in selected theaters only. Being in theaters doesn't mean its not indie. Indie films a big on low budgets so you wont see the giant advertisement campaigns and it usually isn't in every theater like in big company movies.
