I've seen quite a few trailers and previews for it and it certainly looks impressive. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing it when it's released over here.

Only thing historical of it is the armies fighting. Other than that, I really think it's just a big budget action movie. Still going to see it, but not really seeing it as 'historical' in any sense of the word.

what about the trojan horse and helen of troy. I have seen they are both in it though. hose are historical aren't they?
Dante
May 11 2004, 12:48 PM
Well, considering that most of what is known about Troy was passed down in the form of legends from one generation to the next until old Homer decided to put pen to paper, I think the term "historical" is rather relative.
Still makes for a good story, though.

of course there was the eye candy, lot's of eye candy, and a nice sound track
the costumes however, not right, boild leather armour thank you very much, very little metal. At least they got the archic Greek sculpture right

All the people were real.
In this movie director shows the historical facts only, there is no mythology.
And Homer didn't write this rhapsody,he was singing it.
More than a thousand years this rhapsody (Illiada) survived because the one generation told the next and those to the next generation etc.

I know! I mean - if you'd been waring with another country for ages, then all of a sudden they decide to pack up and head home one night leaving nothing but a fuckin' great wooden horse and a note saying:
"Sorry 'bout the war, here's a fuckin' great wooden horse as a parting gift"
I'd be a little suspicious and not entirely grateful. What the hell are you supposed to do with a huge wooden horse?

that is very true, some of the characters were real. however i believe that some of the characters in The Iliad were purely symbolic...

if memory serves me right, the war lasted for 10 years....but the film didn't really portray that...lol...

the horse wasn't a 'parting gift', that is a common misconception. it was meant to be a present to Athene. In The Iliad they stole the statue of Athene from inside the walls of Troy somehow (memory is hazy) because the Trojans believed that as long as it stayed in the city it couldn't be captured. They then built the horse as a 'gift to the goddess' to allow them a safe journey home. Odysseus left behind one of his followers to tell the trojans that the horse was under the protection of athene and any city that received it within its' walls could not be taken (hence the reason why they built it so large). King Priam ordered a section of the walls of troy to be dismantled so that the giant horse could enter the city.....and the rest is 'history'...yeah.....I think i need to read The Iliad again to remember the whole story, lol! Oh and if memory serves I think that the dead Hectors baby child was thrown over the walls of Troy.....*meh* i'll read the book again and get back to you!!

The movie was ok, nothing too special.
The battles were so-so, the storyline had it's good moments, but I don't think it was quite the epic the movie was trying to be. Achilles was a good character, but his death scene was a bit disappointing. (though it was cool to see Legalos again  ) And yeah it certainly didn't feel like 10 years, it felt like the war lasted only for weeks.

I recently saw Troy, like a million times. I thought is was an amazing movie. It got a few points across and it wasn't even that bloody which caught my attention as well. I loved the actors and actresses, they betrayed everything pretty well.
((hehe, well now I have a grudge against Orlando Bloom for killing my man, but besides that))
List your thoughts..

You know I have to agree with ya.
Troy was an awesome movie. I watched it 3 times so far. AND Brad Pitt was AMAZING ::licks lips:: Achillies is my dream man. "You gave me peace in a lifetime of war." Man how I wish I had a man like Achillies around the corner Lol.
Great movie.
Great actors.
Hector was the best.
Paris a coward. Geez I cant view Orlando the same way anymore Lol.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that I hated Troy. Now, Brad Pitt is one of my favorite actors so thats not why. I hated that stupid jump move they had him doing all the time. The cousin was a slut who didn't even wait for the war to be over before she started shacking up with the enemy.
Here she is allegedly a virgin dedicated to Apollo and on day one she drops that and falls in love with this joker who is trying to destroy her city and kill her family. And then!!! Orlando Bloom goes back for her. She wants to sit there with Achilles then good bye. I would have left her bitch ass.
The only part I liked is when Troy's city council is meeting and the oldest son gets up and says that Apollo will not fight this war for them. Best part of the whole thing.
Other than that, they made Pitt out to be the good guy and he wasn't. And then they weave this shitty little slut love tale in the middle of it. Whatever.

Troy bent classical mythology over the desk and gave it the mightiest ass-fucking I've ever seen. Where the hell was Cassandra? Why the hell was Agamemmnon (or is it Agammemnon?) killed? What's going on with that Legolas impersonation? (okay, so that's nothing to do with classical mythology, but still...)

there is still room for it to grow on me.... i like parts of it,...but i think they totally messed it up with the whole servant of apollo... and having pitt seem to be good...like was said, he wasnt supposed to be good.... they changed the story alot... >.<

I thought the movie was good actually. No, it wasn't the classic it was trying to be, but still it had it's "epic" moments and the only thing I can say that I found disappoitning was the weak ending.
I thought it was millions of times better than Alexander, which was truly crap. (since these two are compared alot)
