Are There Any Here That Age Slower That They Should?
Maybe Someone Here Dosn't Age At All.
Whats Going On In With Your Clock?
Vilinastor
I am aging pretty good. I would say a normal rate. I highly doubt that anyone here does not age...but as for my clock, I have no idea what is going on with it. I set the alarm for seven thirty. Next thing I know it is ten o'clock. The alarm never went off. I think it is time for a new clock.
repressedeath
Lol. Yeah A New Clock Would Make For A Great Investment.
I Pretty Sure As Well That Everyone Here Ages.
But, Some Not As Fast As Others.
You Don't Have To Be A Vampire To Age Slower Or Faster That You Should.
However It Is A Possible Part Of The Whole Picture That Isn't Often Explored.
Not Much Is Explored At All. Don't Know Why. It Could Be That It Is Thought
Better To Leave Some Things Alone.
Rhuen
no two people or any two of any species age at the exact same rate thats why they give average rates of ageing, you see it all comes down to metabolism, the higher the metabolism the faster you age, the slower the metabolism the slower the ageing, and their are several other factors such as diet and genetic factors, however the age rateing is usually with in some small decimal degrees between members of the same species. and to even this out nature has made it so men and women with in any species will grow faster or slower during different years of each other. basically it comes down to hormone levels and metabolism.

Right On. My Point To The Letter. I Need Help In Elaborating Sometimes.
Nice Work. And You? No, Aging Differance As Far As You Can Tell?
Khrymzynn
Okay, so you see, each cell you were born with can replicate a limited number of times, roughly fifty. There is a strand on the end of the DNA chain, called a telomere, that breaks off a little bit with every cell division. It's meant to do that. When it runs out, every cell division after that breaks up the DNA itself, destroying useful genes. Pretty soon you get funky mutations and nonviable code.
Systemic metabolism doesn't play into this much, but cells have their own metabolism, a rate at which they divide. Some people would have their cells start breaking down earlier than others, and some people will have slightly longer telomere chains than others.
Telomeres are not an accident, it appears. They are not simple "junk DNA", they are too ordered and deliberate for that. In fact, they are a repeated sequence of six characters (AGGTTT, IIRC) so the implication is that our cells, and our bodies, are designed to wear out and expire after a while. It is also theorized that this was developed as a defense against cancer. Cancer cells divide really fast, so they'll hit the 50-division limit pretty fast, and then die off. Problem is, some kinds of cancer provide a hormone that replenishes the telomere chain, making those cancer cells pretty much immortal. Some viruses do the same thing, like Eppstein-Barr.
Now, visible aging is a different thing, that plays into genetics for skin elasticity, collagen levels, moistures, body metabolism, all kinds of stuff. But at the cellular level, aging is pretty simple. I really can't explain very well why some people look like they are aging more slowly than others.
MesPtah the Doorkeeper
I'm aging pretty good. I look much younger than I am. ^_^ I think it has to do with genetics and how you take care of yourself. It seems to run in my family. *is very, very, grateful too* ^_^ ^_^

Khrymzynn rules. I am a member of the Khrymzynn fan club. You always have such good info!

This metabolism thing - i wish science would come up with some cure for wonky metabolism. I hardly eat anything and I'm quite fat (not in my avatar, that was taken when I was quite ill). As for aging, there are some encouraging results with stem cell research. However, I think no matter how clever they get with regard to delaying ageing, I reckon you'd still be able to tell someone's age. The best facelifts in the world can't hide the fact that you show your life force in your eyes.
Archangel
You show your Life Force (ever the Jedi I am) through your entire being, not just your eyes.

While we're on the subject, I'm aging slower it seems than most people my age. Hey, I'm still on the Internet, playing video games, watching cartoons and having a blast.
Plus I look pretty damn young for 40. ;)
NightVision
"Great, kid: don't get cocky." :P:p:p
Khrymzynn
It is way, way too late to be warning Pier not to get cocky. He was born like that.

And Pier: Yeah right. I've seen your piccies. I'm gullible sometimes, but I'm not going to buy into you pushing the four-oh.

Wonky metabolisms: Unfortunately, science doesn't know nearly enough about the human endocrine system. It's an elaborate system of checks and balances, and there are too many factors to tamper with and too many serious risks involved. We can treat the very most common ailments, like diabetes and menopause (don't start with me, I watched my mom going through that, and menopause is a fucking disease and I will live to see it cured), we can treat some of the most serious ailments (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, gigantism), but the endocrine system ties into everything, it's the frickin' system bus of biology, and doctors are still so limited with it.

Stem cell research: I need to look back into this, but so far I have seen some very promising results in organ replacement. Haven't seen anything to suggest a halt, reversal or even a slowing of the systemic aging process, but if you are content to have your body repaired piece by piece as it wears out (like my brother and his Camaro ;) ) then they've got you covered. But like I said, I haven't read up the latest on that subject.

The problem with any treatment to delay or reverse aging is that it keeps coming back to cancer. As near as I can decipher the texts, we were given limited lifespans as part of a countermeasure to prevent cancer. If our cells were truly immortal and had the capacity to live forever, we would die of cancer even faster than we do already. I did a little study on the subject, and as of 2002, 23% of Texans who died that year died of cancer. And the rate is accelerating. Figure out how to cure or prevent cancer, you will not only save roughly a quarter of the population, you'll also unlock immortality.

Fecking cancer. It's already killed off two of my friends.

*still chuckling over Pier's claims of seniority. He's like, what, 30? Tops?*

Oh, goddamn. Just checked Pier's age on the profile on a hunch, and he did just turn 40. Hmm, edit the post or look like an idiot? I hate editing posts.
qrious
Well at the age i am at the moment i really wouldnt say that im ageing yet. so im happy wub.gif
NightVision
I would say, find out how to harness the essence of cancer (ie abnormal cell growth) and control it, and we may well have a path to cell replacement and longevity. Cancer's weird, it's not like a disease it's more like a possession. Who would have thought that the body on a growth drive could lead to its destruction? It's like part of your body becomes immortal, but it kills off the mortal parts and the whole organism just can't cope...
Khrymzynn
If we could figure out a simple, universal method for controlling the rate of cell growth, we'd have it whipped. If there was some magic potion that regulated how fast cells divided, there would be no more cancer as we know it. Then there would be all kinds of possibilities for telomere replenishment. Hell, we've even isolated the enzyme that can extend telomeres, and thereby extend the lifespan of a cell, but the possibilities of full-body cancerous growth is just horrible. I don't think they're even testing it on rats yet, they're still on bacteria and fruit flies last I heard.
Most cancerous tumors don't produce telomerase, and so they burn themselves out and die off early. It is possible that this happens rather a lot, to all of us, but is disregarded because it never has a chance to threaten our health. But every so often, a cancer mutates so that it extends its own telomeres, and then you have a real problem. That's when it becomes life-threatening.
If someone just shot themselves up on telomerase, every single one of those tiny cancers that you never even know about would become life-threatening malignancy. So, it needs a lot more research.
But once we figure out how to regulate cell division, it is so on. ^_^
amanda mc
Interesting, but doesnt gravity also play a part in the ageing process ?.
Rhuen
we age faster in the absence of gravity. but it does pull down on loosened skin and fat too.
amanda mc
So we age faster without it how come?
Rhuen
every thing on earth "includeing our cells" has evolved in perfect equilibrium with every aspect of our environment, includeing gravity, with out gravity, we have nothing to work against so our muscles atrophy, our bones lose density, and our bodies cells react to these conditions like a domino effect in which these muscle and bone mass loss being part of ageing thus it kicks in other ageing aspects of our bodies. "basically it cause a cellular breakdown which has the same biological effects as ageing" we don't actually lose time, on comeing back and exorcising we regain our bodie's normal conditions. but too long in space can make it ir-reversable.
amanda mc
Okay i get it,now there talking about cloneing humans do you think that amethod will be found eventualy for controleing the rate of cell growth?
SinfulBeing
I'm 15 viking.gif yep
damienreborn
i age about normal i would guess.

khrym where do you get all that science babble you are going to confuse everyone and one day choke on all that information. twocents.gif

It would be nice if you would cut your sig down alittle it is too big...Thanks in advance.
Barnabas
:meow: And quit claiming to be a classical vampire.

As for aging...I am 29 and I have a lot of gray hair and arthritis...so I guess my aging has not been done gracefully.

On the other hand, that could be due to being an ex-alcoholic, and a smoker...as well as being in the sun way to much.
Dreambird
I wish I aged slowly. When I was 16 (now 24) I looked like I was 24.. Damn the genetics to hell.
Shadowvamp
I dont know about immortality, but vamps age like mortals. I have heard stories though about blood lengtning your life. 2guns.gif
NightVision
Care to expand on that? (you must have known I was going to ask!)
Blackscript
i age diff from my friends i am eathir aging faster or slower i cant tell most of the time.... i think i am aging much slower  unsure.gif

Thread has been cleaned.

The Guinness book of records currently states that the oldest living man is 114 years old. There are anecdotal cases of people living longer than that, but in the absence of records we can't prove it. I don't find it inconceivable that a person can live to 120. Imagine all the things you'd see in that time...
Dreambird
120.. damn Id shoot myself if I were that old... but there were "reports" of a man living In China to be about 139-140 years old...
Shadout
I saw something on tv about the world oldest person, some woman in China I think. She actually missed the day of her birthday when the record was broken because she has to sleep for two days straight in order to stay awake for one day. Doesn't sound like the way I want to spend my retirement really.
Dreambird
That would just plain suck to have to sleep for two days to stay up for one... think of all the parties you missed..
NightVision
Yes...wrinkly parties...

My great gran had a party. It consisted of her sitting at the edge of a room with loads of other old people staring at the cake. What fun.
Dreambird
Yea.. that would just suck... there would be nothing in comparison to being that old.. ew.. just think of all the nooks and crannnys theve got.. Nastey moon.gif
Barnabas
:meow: I'll tell you...if I make it past sixty I will be totally shocked...then turn around and shoot myself. I just plain old do not want to get old. I have watched my parents and grandparents wither and die and that just is not my idea of the good life...y'know
Shadout
I just don't want to live that long after I retire. I mean, I don't like gardening and I frickin' hate Countdown!! Being old would be the death of me!
Myth
you are aleady old to a kid of 4yares...

old age is somting thats in the eye of the beholder...
Liod
Myth is right. There's been a point in my life when I was totally convinced turning 30 would be the end of my life. At that age I would be old, dull, with no real point in going on. Now, that it's getting closer, it's not really that bad. I can see the upsides in turning 40, and 50 too. You don't have to change because you grow older, the major changes comes because you forget who you once were. If you don't like gardening, get a condo. Don't want to watch Countdown (is it a TV show?) then don't watch it. Grow old reminiscing over old Buffy episodes. Enjoy the fact that you no longer has to work. Love the thought of spending time with the grandchildren, but love even more the ability to send them away when you grow tired of them. It's your life. How you want it to be is your choice. Who said you had to be stereotypical?

/end rant.
Rhuen
I plan to make three digits before passing away.
Barnabas
:meow: I guess that I have to agree with Clear on that...I am pretty darn close to 30 and it really does not look that bad...except for the bald spot forming on the back of my head. mellow.gif
Amon
well, speaking of metabolism and stuff...i age slower than the rest of my peers. I am 16, but look younger, i mean i have the height and build, but look younger than 16. Its no the metabolism (I dont think) because i have a very high metabolism. but, it just happens.
Barnabas
:meow: Don't take this the wrong way...but what do you know about it? for goodness sakes...your only 16. :imu:

I'm 27, but has been guessed as low as 17 in the last year...that doesn't mean I age slower. I just have a baby face...it's all about the way you look...and the way you feel.
Rhuen
I was going to say something simular, a 16 year old has no right to talk about looking there age, okay maybe you don't have a mustache/beard yet or something like that, doesn't mean your ageing slower. until you look around at others your own age and you look like a perfectly fit 25-35 year old and they look like walking skeletons with bags of flesh hanging off them than you can say your definetly ageing slower than them.
Barnabas
:meow: I agree with that clear...but I just think that you do not begin to to feel the effects of age until you actually start to age...and you do not start to age at 16
MesPtah the Doorkeeper
I agree with Clear too.
If you think you're going to be too old to do this or that, then you will be. Age is a frame of mind. I feel the same as I did when I was twenty. People never believe how old I am, and I'm really glad now. When I was younger, I wanted to look older. Ha! We can be so silly sometimes. I will continue to do all the things I like to do until I can't anymore. Then I will find new things. Being active, being happy, that's a big part of staying young. ^_^

You're absolutely right. At 16 your body uis still in hormonal turmoil, you're only half grown...give it 20 more years, and you'll have a better idea of your aging process. Besides, apparent age is a very subjective matter. People will usually assume shorter people are younger, while taller people are older. They'll judge by clothes, hairstyle, complexion, and behaviour...
NightVision
Well...playing devil's advocate here: it is possible to look younger than you are in your early teens. When I was 16 I looked twelve. I couldn't get served in a pub until I was 21 (the age restriction for alcohol over here is under 18).

Isn't it funny how when you get older, people younger than you look massively younger than you? When you were at that age, you couldn't see the childlike features that still remained on your face, or your friends'.

I used to wonder: when I'm 70, will I automatically fancy younger people because well, no offence to anyone, but 70 year olds are quite horrible-looking to the immature mind? Having the benefit of a little hindsight, I now realise your perception of age 'ages' with you. When I'm 70, I'll probably fancy other 70 year olds (although most likely the ones who still have their own teeth and hair). Point is, you cannot 'see' your age.

Am I making sense?
Barnabas
:meow: Perfectly clear NV. And Clear....If being short makes you look young...I will be 28 forever mellow.gif
Liod
Hehe...I don't have that advantage, unfortunately...I wouldn't mind being short for a while...
