i mean, couldn't they sleep in a complete pitch black room?

There are a several reasons why Classical vampires are depicted as sleeping in coffins.
1) First off, Blame Bram. He had Dracula sleeping in a coffin at home, and in boxes of consecrated earth when on the move. Bram Stoker is mainly responsible for the gimmicky 20th century representations of the vampire simply because his book was so popular is became absorbed into popular culture. And he got the idea from the fact that:
2) Classical vampires in mythology are always undead. They were human, and they died. Therefore they are found in coffins in which they were originally buried, and from which they rise. It's a way in which storytellers of old hit home the idea that they are dead creatures to their audience. It's a symbol of their connection to death.
3) Vampires have always been prtrayed with certain vulnerabilities, such as not liking the sun, a need to hide from vampire hunters and raging mobs, they need a protective shell, and a coffin is one.
4)Couldn't they sleep in a pitch black room? Yeah, of course. At least that's something the film The Lost Boys explored. "This cave...It's one giant coffin". All things are possible in Fiction.

I agree with Nightvision also if you look up the old euoropean vampires you may find that most were peasents so they wouldn't have had coffins "expensive" just dumped in the dirt, Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust used this when D had to bury himself to heal.

I never got that D explanation, I assumed it was based off of Stoker's story, but was never really sure because it wasnt D's home soil...I dunno, just stood out as being kind of odd. I mean, if he wanted to get out of the sun - his cape is big enough, isnt it?
Anyways, coffins are a sense of security.
I've actually been in one, not buried alive, but the close-ness of it all is very womb-like, and very soothing.
I mean, I could get used to sleeping with one as long as it didnt fill up with C02...and I had a nice blanket. ^_^
You're right though, hardrocksoul, I assume with the most widely accepted vampire myth, a vampire could regenerate anyplace without sunlight.

I always wanted to sleep in a coffin.. Perferably an open one. lol I would't mind it being closed if i was awake. If I were to tell my mom about my idea she'd kill me. She doesn't like my idea's <_< .. Oh well you can't win over everyone

No, vampires don't need coffins. They just can't be in the sun.
After being turned, though, they'll let themselves be buried and then rise again later. That was witnessed mostly in the past centuries. Now, since we've got cremation, I think that vampires would be more careful. They'd probably just... get up and leave.

I think the whole 'vampires sleep in coffins' thing is uber corny.
First of all, you'd probably get crusty after a while. I mean, not only do you shun the sunlight as a vampire but sticking yourself in a box all day long? You're likely to get flaky skin and that's just bad for the image. Especially if all the good pharmacy stores are closed by the time you wake up and you can't even get a good lotion. I mean, sure, you could go to the supermarket and get a cheap bottle of lotion but those are always low quality and I'd much prefer to spend a few extra bucks on good quality skin lotion. But that's just me.
Second of all, that'd just be creepy. Ok, yeah, la la la, vampires, grrr, nasty, creepy scary undead things. But isn't that pushing it a little far? Personally, I'd wear bright colors and do happy things if I was a vampire. Not only would people not expect it, but I bet that the depression rate upon vampires is frighteningly high. All that black and darkness, it's not good for the brain.

I'd like to see someone come in and defend WHY all the vampires wear black trenchcoats and leather pants.
Misu
Feb 15 2004, 05:24 PM
You want someone to give you a good reason why vampires wear black trench coats and black leather pants? Well, the dusters are more preferred than the trench coats by vampires, but I'll give you a good reason!
They wear leather pants and black dusters because they look sexy in them. Sorry, that's the best I can do.
But Angel, Angelus, and Spike? Yeah, that's the definition of sexy. And James Marsters? Forty-one? He looks younger than David Boreanaz! And David Boreanaz is twenty-eight!

Two points.
1. If you're going to accuse someone else of being stupid, or saying something stupid, then you'd damn well better not come across as stupid on your own part. You've failed this part of the test miserably.
What you should have said was -
That is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard.See - here's where you screwed up.
1. You didn't close your size tag.
2. Sentences should be constructed using both capital and lowercase letters, each where appropriate.
3. You forgot to put a period at the end of the sentence.
4. The - not 'th'. 'Th' is a sound, not a word.
5. Heard - not 'herd'. Herd is a group of animals.
2. Although you failed the first part of the test, you may now have a chance to vindicate yourself by rallying to the second part. It's fairly easy. Wow us by saying something more intelligent than that which you 'herd'.

Besides I don't think when they're in their coffin they have sex in mind. They probably have a bed for all the non-coffin-appropriate times, or just for a change.

i think vamps don't have to live in their coffin. i mean, in some books they carry the dirt from there grave with them wherever they go, but in others like buffy, it's just underground away from the light.
