Seems to me, damn near everyone wants to be something they aren't. Remember when you were a kid, and you used to pretend you were Superman, or Spiderman, or Superwoman, or any of the great comic heros? And remember when you used to play cowboys and Indians? Nothing wrong with it now, either, as long as you can keep your reality check. Some folks daydream about being vampires, werewolves, ghosts, or jedis ;), some daydream about being Bill Gates, some daydream about being the President, and some dream about being a great oil sheik. Some think about what if I had this power, or that power. This is one way great writers are made. It's the folks that start thinking they ARE that daydream that get into trouble. Case in point: Charles Manson.

Immortality
Freedom from guilt
Worrying only about yourself
Endless self gratification
Being something other than bound by the constraints of humanity

I guess it does seem rather tempting after all…
IWillFearNoEvil
oh yes, it does. But I'm not a killer, I cried when the wounded bird that I tried to help died. I cried when we buried the rodent that was chewing on our garbage bage and opening up the bag (and thus causing meses.)

I got teary-eyed when my bro and I buried the squirrel, roadkill, last week.

I'm here (in this world) to celebrate life.

Humph, I'll have you know I declared myself a Sacred Upholder Of The Jedi Code in the last Census. Many more of us, there are.

Thank you for the complment IWillFearNoEvil. ;)

Nem, are you sure about Bill Gates? I'd rather be Genghis Khan, personally.

I don't want immortality, why would I want to watch everyone I love die? Why would I want to live forever on this godforsaken planet? I have no need for immortality. Why would I want their weaknesses, which outweigh their strengths in many cases.
Crossdagger
I would want immortality to watch those that i love die so i can absorb their souls and then they will be with me forever.
Pure Vampyric Evil
Why one wishes to be a vampyr..

Based upon the mainstream of vampyric ideals and traits being from Hollywood and popular writers such as Anne Rice, vampyrs are beautiful, elegent, powerful, ever lasting life and beauty and with personalities that bring others to their nears and power to give and destroy life with little to no consequences..something that most would die for, ha literately if they were to be brought back undead.

And if it were real it may not be so bad either.. that is providing you were into vanity and you were already good looking or some how becoming a vampyr made you good looking..but I don't believe it making a person good looking is part of the deal, perhaps a bit more catching in some manner or another.

I really wanted to avoid posting in this topicbut I couldn't resist.

Daydreaming and wanting to be something is good even if it is a thing that goes around hunting and killing hte human race for survival.

You can dress a certain way. Make up stories about your life. Try and act like something different. Make people believe you are something you aren't. But remember no matter what people around you think you will still know in your mind and your soul that you are a no good liar and that you are living a life of lies.

that applies to claiming to be a vampire or claiming to be from a rich family when you are poor or lying to that girl just to get her number.
dreams of death
Sorry I didn't have time to read the rest of the posts so if I repeating some one elses reply I am truly sorry.

So, in reply to the sourse. I think that if someone says they are a vampire, this could be for many reasons:

ATTENTION: Many people crave the attention of others. They like others to look up to them, or some like it if someone hates them. Whatever type of attention they get from this it makes them feel better.

SELF ESTEEM:Some people do not feel good about them selves, so there for if they can pretend that they are somebody else and live in this dream world, they automaticaly feel better and there feeling are even more uplifted when they are given extra attention by people that they may not have already.

CRY FOR HELP: Some poeple use suicide to show people that they need help, others go mad. Some may also become extremely different and try to take themselves totaly out of the society that they are living in, this could be done by 'becoming a vampire'. Aloso if they go to the very extreme of extreme it will make others around them notice them.

PLAY:Some poeple may not take this so seriously and alike to a child pretending to be a cat or a dog, this person may be playing the vampire instead.

MENTAL:Also the other idea is that they might have mental problems and actually think that they are a 'vampire'.

then i guess you're one of the few people who doesen't want that.others think different.i for one think u're right.
Gwinevere
so yeah, different people daydream, and even actively want to be, all sorts of things.

but why vampires? i think that vampires, in particular, hold all sorts of attractions for people. first of the top of my head comes the basic attractiveness, the base sexuality, that vampires are far more often than not portrayed as possessing. who, in the brutal honesty of their own mind, where no one else can see, doesn't want to be that kind of attractive? no one. being attractive, magnetic, sexy gives you advantages over others that are undeniable.

second thing to mind is the power that vampires are commonly portrayed as possessing. the telepathy, the telekinesis, the sheer physical strength are all also incredibly attractive traits to any individual, because they give the bearer an undeniable advantage over others.

after that come a whole host of reasons that are individually tailored, so to speak. they call to a person based on certain pre-existing personality traits, rather than on a general, the-whole-human-population-wants-this level.

immortality appeals to those who crave knowledge (with eternity, the time you have to learn a certain thing is extended, and the number of things available to you to learn is increased unimaginably. imagine learning to stalk and kill a tiger tens of thousands of years ago, and learning to navigate the internet today!), those who crave security (if you can't die, there is a certain, oft-feared change that will never happen to you), and those unimaginative that can't really fathom being lonely.

vampire's nocturnal nature appeals to those whose circadian rythyms happen to put them up at those hours anyway, those that can't abide bright light for whatever reason (migraines, disposition to sunburn), and those that really want to impress people by how "dark" they are. (alright, that was a bit harsh. i'm sure there are people out there that really do enjoy the dark for no pinpointable reason.)

the bloody nature of a vampire lifestyle appeals to natural sadists, natural masochists, and those that really want to impress people by how "dark" they are. (this one i stand by.)

the hunter appeals to those that are either very strong or very weak, for obvious reasons, although i find that those who are in reality very weak become fascinated and want to "be" a vampire more often than those who are in reality very strong.

so in conclusion, i think i'll just rephrase my opening, as i think it will get discussion moving again. yes, people dream of being all different kinds of things, but why vampires, specifically?
Shade is a Penguin
I dunno why other people would want to but I know I'd want to cause it just seems kinda cool and stuff.

Why does it seem kewl? what exactly makes this idea of being a vampire kewl and interesting?

I think Guinevere summed it up rather nicely.

In a nutshell, it's Escapism.

people who have problems and want to be a vampire are afriad, often of themselve as a vampire they can look in a mirror and see what they want to be strong and fearless they hide, if you want to be a vampire you dont need to ask yourself and you must consider the views on it people look down on differeces even the smallest details.

what can you gain inmoryalllity so after 200yrs you watch you loved ones die your world burn what have you got but yourself and self hatred you wanted to be a vampire so not to die but you end up so hateful at yourself you take you own life.

think about theconsequence of that small desison myself it would make not difference but if i lived for ever i would try and inprove all the wrong i have done to my family before they die for there sake.

great question you deserve good answers hope not to offend anyone

hope of use

Personally i don't mind if my loved ones die becaus i beleive as long as you loved them and they loved you back they will always be with you, so i guess i'd make a great vampire. But i think that people want to be vampires to escape their problems, but in return would they be strong enough to except their new existence?

It seems as if to many it is about power, particularly many males. To the females, mainly romance or passion. This is a huge generalization though and of course not everyone in the world will fit within it.

I do not think everyone is full of it either. To some they might actually be everything that they consider a vampire to be.

As for those who decide the limits of reality from the limits imagined within their own minds or those of their peers, and hold to them without question, perhaps it is they who are the most deluded of all? Why must all reality be limited to what you and those you know can think?

For me, I never really wanted to be a vampire and I am not one. Oh wait, maybe a few times when I was like nine years old after watching a movie (I think the first one I saw was "Fright Night"? lol) or something, but not really other than that or just being silly. The whole blood thing always has kind of repulsed me a bit, particularly because it seems pointless violence when done a certain way. Now the whole superpowers bit, well, hell, I told you I was human. I wouldn't be a normal modern human male if I didn't want that some time, would I? :) Not to make something serious into a joke or anything... just to kind of answer your question.... It's normal in a way, up to a point, I believe.

Most people...well...I wont go that for, but alot of people want to be vampyres because the the media induced idea of what a vampyre is. They just think it looks cool.

As for those who actually know what a vampyre is...They may have their own personal reasons, or atleast I believe everyone has personal reasons. I think most mainstream reasons are caused by the media.

Like so many have said its escapism. hollywood and books and videogames etc.. create a beutiful or handsome nobel creature that can live forecer so long as it avoids certain things and get stronger as it gets older and will live forever, but remember these two things "nothing lasts forever" and a philosopher once said "immortality it seems to me would cause insanity"

the first even our sun will sun day explode and consume the earth before it burns out. our moon will move away from the earth before that causing our world to tumble just like mars making life as we know it immpossible "nothing that has blood will be left on this world" before then we will have any number of thermal and ice ages and any number of catastrophies that could wipe out humans and other higher life forms for a long time before something replaces them. So a crature like a vampire wouldn't last forever even if it was immortal "saveing the whole sci-fi angle of going into space like in Vampire Hunter D Blood Lust.
Besides if these monster actually existed they would porbably resemble the actual mythological creature which as I have pointed out in numerouse threads is not the nobel wonderful thing people think it is because of Stoker's book Dracula "the first time the vampire was ever depicted as a nobel or charismatic in any since" always before this book the vampire was a monsterouse undead peasent. So I wouldn't want to be a European Vampire. Some eastern European obscure vampires are attractive as something to be as are some middle eastern and far eastern strains but none of those can pass on their vampirism it has to be gained through mysticism or be born as one.
Crossdagger
My main reason for becoming a vamp would be to become a sort of super-hero but the shear idea of being a super-hero would be so straining it probably drive me to evil. But i would just think the abilities are so sweet mainly because i have a wild imagination.

I thought that people who wanted to be a vampire would be a fraid of death and wouldn't want to died like the rest of the world but live forever and never worry about dying (unless you get killed) me I wonder what it is like to be dead but then again I don't want to sleep forever you know what I mean mellow.gif
Crossdagger
I don't want to die simply because i don't want to go to a place where i can't sin because that's what makes us who we are if you think about it.

[FONT=Courier][B][I] i could understand as much as the next person the passion of being a vampire, i never called my self one i never got fang caps put on my teeth,in many ways i want with a passion to be a vampire or one of my superheros in progress,as someone said before the daydream of being something like a vamp or superhero inspires writers, and it has inspired me so damn much to make stories ever since 10 ive been writting books and drawing comics (i just wish i could finish one lol) but the passion to become these things vampire/superhero still thrives through out me but i gotta stick to reality, and thats why i want to make movies bring my characters the very things i want to be and bring them to life so that maybe another boy or girl will feel the same passion from my characters and wanna be just like me lol. but my dream of makin movies is far from hope im a drop out who wants to go to college but i ain't got no money for that lol im a small person with humungouse dreams lol

I don't know what it is, but there is something about vampires, and everything to do with the mystical side of life that has always captured me and pulled me to it. To me vampires are like the elite. They are above all the petty problems of our human societies, they're untouchable. They have the power to do almost anything they want.
But at the same time they so isolated and forever..well..lonely. Theyre romantic, theyre sensual, there everything that I could ever want to be. I don't know enough words to describe the calling I feel deep inside me when I think of them and allow myself the slight fraction of hope that there might be a possibility that they exist, somewhere, and that I might be able to somehow join that exception of humanity.
Its just there.
IWillFearNoEvil
heh, yeah.

in fact your post churned up some thoughts in me. Vampire are one of the purest transcendentalists there are. Their goal is simple and straight forward, and they don't have to deal with the petty details of normal human life. (seeing as they're dead and all, and they don't have as much maintence for their bodies.) With their powers they can easily run away from society if they chose, and they're above and seperate from society and it's suggestions as it is.

but if i was going to be a vampire, i'd definetly want to hang out with another vampire or two. Maybe not hunt together, but have some other people to trade stories with after the night is done.
Tindomerel
Definately. If I was ever to be a vampire I don't think I could handle it being alone. After all, in becoming a vampire you lose everyone else you were attatched to in your mortal life. Whether you still love them or not, you're going to lose them as they move on with their life and yours stands permanently still. The only way for you not to be alone is to find others of your kind. And I have to say, that's part of the dream. To find someone or a group of someones that i can spend a millenia with if I chose to, not just the measley fifty or so years that can be expected of a human relationship.
The only thing I have to question is, as a vampire, would I be capable of the love I can feel as a human?

*answering original question*

People want to be Vampires because the whole idea is romantic. (if that's the right word, you know what I mean though).
Immortality, living forever, developing through the times... some people are into that. Heck, I'd love that... seriously.
Some people just like the image, and some people like the powers that go along with it.
Amadeo
My personal opinion is that people wish they were vampires because vampires are a release of the darker side of humanity. But are even so, an entity seperate from humanity because of their undead nature. Their powers, eating habits, and aversion to the sun (of which all legends seem to agree) seem to augmet that idea. The vampires are creatures of the dark, and we are enamored of them, those things we are enamored of, we can only wish to then emulate.
CrystalxDeath
Being a vampire is frightening, and yet thrilling at the same time.

Vampirism, as Anne Rice (one of my idols) seems to show in her Chronicles, is about redemption and retribution. And if you think about it, it makes sense.

Would you really want to be a vampire? Be a creature that would never be able to see the sun again, and thrive upon the death of mortals, of a kind that you were once? Could live for eternity like that?

Vampires don't live forever, in my opinion. It's a horror, a fascinating horror, I admit, one that yes, many including myself fantasize about, but still, a frightening horror.

Can one live forever, the way they do? Feeding off of mortals, not caring about anyone but themselves? Or would you long for a companion, long for an ending to the vicious cycle of waking, feeding, and sleeping? Would you ultimately seek the sun, just to know what is beyond? Immortality, people believe is a giant gift. But could you stand to not only watch your loved ones die, but to watch others, people you don't know, go? Leave the mess that this earth had become?

I don't understand why people pretend to be vampires. I have my own little vampire files, but never in my life would I want to be a vampire.

Ever.
hardrocksoul
i personally don't want to be a vampire. so i couldn't answer this question. i rather live a mortal life to the fullest extent then die happy and be a free spirit...opposed to a vampire, who never ever dies, acknowledges how shitty their situation is, then wanting to go away so badly, yet forced to feed off the very ones they want to become -- forever. that freakin' sucks. plus, your limited to the night. i don't like to feel limited to anything. except for life. i hate it. which is why i want to make the best of it and die. sorry, i'm ranting... ^_^

well, there are some vampires who are just blood-sucking bastards that don't care...but if i was given the chance to be a vampire just for a while and not eternally, hell, i would do it. i want to taste the blood shed of david bowie...

OOO OOO! (all following material is copyright IWillFearNoEvil)

so, we have this family. it's sorta a big family, (two parents, and the kids are at the ages 22-10 or so. heck, it could be a family clan with extended family...)

anyway, there's this horrible evil that starts attacking the family. so the eldest son turns himself into a vampire so he can have more power to protect his family. he defends the family successfully, but now that he has all eternity to live he decides to make sure to protect the family in the future, and every few years he checks in with the family. (covertly of course, as the new generations are told about the vampire in their family- or if they are told, it's more of a fairy tale)

so another evil is attacking the family and the family sort of rejects the vampire guy... because it's been a good four generations or so since the vampire guy originally became a vampire and protected the family.
