It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.

Dolphins have been trained in attack-and-kill missions since the Cold War. The US Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have apparently been taught to shoot terrorists attacking military vessels. Their coastal compound was breached during the storm, sweeping them out to sea. But those who have studied the controversial use of dolphins in the US defence programme claim it is vital they are caught quickly.

Makes you wonder what else they're experimenting with. When they've thought of training killer dolphins, who knows what's next.

They have all kinds of stuff they hide from people. Like the UFO in Roswell Mexico. They should be forced to come clean. The have no right keeping information from us.

That is a really scary thought. Hopefully, they're armed with nothing more than the tranqs.

Yes we keep them up and running with taxes so we should know everything. If people were not so useless we could band together to put an end to it.

I have seen quite a bit on this subject and I would be of the opinion that the dolphin were not armed as the military would only arm them during training and when used for missions. They don’t even let active military wander around with live ammo. It is strange none the less. Has anyone ever seen the George C Scott movie The Day of The Dolphin? This was a film from 1973 where he trained a dolphin to carry a mine to blow up the president’s yacht. How about the film Johnny Mnemonic? The hero of the film is a cybernetic military dolphin. The military is currently using sea lions to guard navy installations over seas. The world has embraced the use of marine mammals in fiction and in life for many reasons. I for one think it’s a good idea as it will help keep their species on the planet and they will not be some of the ones that are brought to extinction. Now if they would only get fricken sharks with fricken laser beams attached to their heads I would be much happier.

For safety reasons "you don't have the right to know top secret information" as it may leak to foreign powers and be used against us, or they may know what to prepare for.

How reliable is this site/newspaper? I've heard of the Guardian but this sounds 'tabloid-ish' to me. Dolphins with weapons mounted? Sounds like something out of Austin Powers. :10:

Some times it's good for the other side to know what to use. Against the US it will come closer to being a fair battle.

And know what the other guy has doesn't always help. Bush knew the US had planes and so did Bin'Ladin. Bush also knew that Bin'Ladin had bigger weapons. And look the smaller one that nobody was expecting got used.

We don't want a fair fight, that's not how it works, the idea is too loose as few as possible "zero prefered" of your own soldiers while killing as many of the other side's or at least crippling their ability to fight back.

same reasons why security companies don't release their procedures to the general public.

    It also works for ants,

speaking of which: fun military fact, there is a government funded group of military stradigists who study the combat styles of ants and other animals that frequently go to war. "and the best part is that they actually learned some things from it"

"send enough people and you can conquer a world" problem is having enough people.
